I have the boat in dry dock (my garage), and am doing some pre-season maintenace on it. I have been curious about my drive shaft and whether it is bent or not.

So, to check it while it was in the boat, I went to Harbor Freight, and bought a TIR tool for $16. Came home and rigged up a little device all held in place with my table vice to see if the shaft was straight or not. It worked very well. It gave me a reading of ~.003" from 0 on the dial. So, I think it is in spec. I used a wooden dowl rod that I used my Dremel tool to carve out a concave on the end as a place for the threaded area of the shaft to ride on while checking. It all worked very well. Not sure if this is a proper way to do this procedure or not, but, I wanted to check to see if it was at least in the ballpark.

Dave,
As long as there isn't any movement between the boat and floor, your method will work. I use an indicator with flex arms and then clamp it to the strut and have the prop removed.. The .003 is good.
