I assume my cable broke today. I have not taken the time to fully evaluate. But my wife was complaining about turning the wheel. A bit later, I noticed it was really easy.... cause it was not turning the rudder.

I reached under the dash and grabbed a greasy cable. Is that a typical failure? Is it attached to the rudder link and the other end extends and retracts under the dash?

anyway, I have been reading up on the cable and I assume it is past time. Boat has 1300 hours, not sure if the PO changed the cable. So I also searched for the cable. An older thread talks about using a cable that is less than $200. Looking at NautiqueParts.com it seems that the 92 might be special?

So where else do I look and what am I looking for?

Thanks

From this photo it seems that I may be correct on my assumption of Rotary Steering. One end connected to the rudder, the other floats in and out of the rotary gear.

Mine broke near the rudder and as I turned the steering wheel the cable just kept extending out of the short lower tube on the steering gear.

And I have found a $139 replacement. Ski Dim has part number 120514. It replaces the NLA Morse 304411-240 and -234. Plus eBay and Amazon, etc... seem to have others if you google the old Morse part #

Is that what the majority here go with?

You got lucky on the cost of that cable. Cables can be confusing with all the special runs, and unique configurations, and very expensive too. My '87 Martinique requires a longer throw cable and costs $300+. Of course it was a one off that CC used back in the day.

So, instead of buying a new one since mine wasn't broke, but, just very stiff from lack of use, I pulled it out took the ends off, and let it soak over the winter in a top secret concoction of acetone and trans fluid which I discovered on a website. Anyway, cable works like new now.

I was able to remove the cable and pull an old ski rope in it's place. I ordered the $138 one and found a 10% coupon, so I nearly covered my freight. I found the MORSE part number stamped on the red covering (...-234), so I did order the correct one.

I assume this one was original.... 1300 hours. I know the guy I bought the boat from had a family of skiers, so they gave the cable a bigger workout than I have for the past 8 years,

It seemed to have broken somewhere in the middle. Once I get it to the bench, I will check it out a bit closer. Just seems odd,

It was not that difficult to remove, but it is a lot of belly and knee crawling. Took about an hour and a half. But I spent a good bit of time documenting with pictures so I can get it all back together.

Since the cable is NLA, how about the helm parts. Should I try and replace the plastic bushings? There were two black bushing that held the big gear in place and a white one that held the cable close to the big gear.
