89+ stringers

Just thought I'd bump this thread to see if anyone has heard of 89-92 boats with the upgraded glass (resin) needing stringer repair. I'd love to pick up a 93+ boat... but there are a lot of great deals on 90-92 hulls that I may eventually pull the trigger on if the risk of stringer repair is low.

That is interesting about your 89 vs 91. I just can't believe how many 91-92 boats are on the market in the 6-7K range for what look like solid boats. 93+ boats seem to be commanding a pretty penny. I'm looking forward to more feedback from the forum. I think I heard of one person needing to repair a portion of the floor in a 92 boat... but that's it. Thanks for your reply.

It all depends upon how the boat was used and cared for. If it was left out in the rain there will always be ways for water to find its way down to the wood. I found wet foam under a crack in the floor in my 1993 boat. I removed the wet foam and put fresh dry foam in before repairing the crack. My boat was a very, very well used ski school tug.

If buying a pre-1993 boat do a check just like you would for any boat with wood stringers. There is a link to a checklist in the FAQ.

I had to replace the stringers in our 92 sport. Floor behind drivers seat is where I first noticed the rot then I accidentally stuck a finger through the starboard stringer while working on the boat.

For the right price I wouldn't be afraid to buy another boat with wood stringers. It took me about 4 or 5 weeks of working nearly every evening for a couple of hours to finish it. There's some great details on how to do it on this site. Don't cut corners and spend the money on good materials and you'll only change them once. I think I had around $1,800 in the repair when I was done. It might have even been a little less. It's been a couple of years since I finished it. Still have the boat and still love it!
