Hello, i am getting ready to put a chevy 350 truck motor into my Chris. it originaly had the chevy 283 flywheel forward and years ago was changed out to a 350.. Question, the transmission and engine share the same oil, I have the manual paragon, I have been told the crankshaft has to be drilled to allow oil to get into the tranny?? but the motor and tranny are bathed in the same oil, has anyone done this process???? I don't want to have to remove the crank from my engine if I don't have to..

thats unusual that the tranny would operate off of motor oil it's not a very good hydraulic fliud. Are you sure the trany wasn't changed too?

Welcome Jay.
Sorry I can't help you but someone here will. Both running on same oil is surprising. |

did many of these years ago, probably forgot alot though, I believe it is all one sump and does run on engine oil, the engine gear (input shaft) bolts to the front of the crankshaft do you have the model number and serial? if you do i can call or you can call Paragon Gear 440-951-5111 ask for Chuck Hancock or Charlie Rother (old timer)with the sn they can pull info from their archives and tell exactly what it is

oh yeah, I am about 99 percent sure that you do not have to drill anything, it is all splash lubricated, caution.... on removal of trans pop top cover and remove 2 bolts inside trans

there should still be parts available for that trans, ask chuck at paragon, tear apart the planetary drum and check the shafts they are probably worn, a good indication of this is very noisy reverse. i keep waisting space here but these thoughts keep popping up

Hi Calalierguy. I am an ex-Chris Craft owner myself. Mine was a 1959 Capri. It came with the same setup you are talking about. And yes the tranny and engine DO share the same oil. The sun gear for the planetary gear set presses onto the nose of the crankshaft. If you have the gear off and look into the center of it, you will see a small hole which is use to meter the oil from the crankshaft to the planetary gears. I replaced my 283 with a 327 and had to have my 327 crank drilled by a machine shop. The hole should be drill far enough to reach the #1 main journel. Then another hole should be drilled from the journel to the center of the crank so that the #1 main bearing supplies lube oil to this added circuit. Write back if you need any more info about this mod.

Corrections to the above post: First of all, please allow me to apologize for misspelling your name. Second, there is also a bolt with a very small hole drilled through it (lengthwise) that threads into the nose of the crank (after the sun gear is pressed on). The hole in the bolt is what meters the oil flow to the planetary gears in your Paragon tranny. The planetary gears don't need to be lubricated when the trans is in forward because everything is locked together including the sun gear, planetary gears and drum. The whole a$$embly spins as one unit in forward. However, in reverse, the drum is locked stationary, the sun gear spins and reverse is accomplished through the planetary to the output shaft. The planetary gears require lubrication in reverse. I'm not sure, but I think the oil gets spun out of the drum while in forward at high speeds due to centrifugal force. Hope this helps.
