Got a new to me acme 1210 for the 78 tique. Thanks Brian! And thanks to Alan and Greg for help with bringing it to NC. Improved holeshot and top end for sure. That said it makes steering VERY sensitive. When going straight a slight turn of the wheel makes the boat lunge to the side. Not smooth at all. Is this normal? Also when throttling down the boat lunges left. Always done this. Normal?

Anyone with this similar experience? The steering is frustrating and we are considering going back to stock prop.

Dave,
Due to the high recommendations here, the first summer I had my Tique I tried the Acme 540. The test drive lasted less than 20 minutes and the Tique was out of the water and the OJ was back on the boat. The first thing I noticed was the "buzzing" that the prop made. Then yes, sensitive steering but controllable. (you may want to check for excessive play on your steering) Hole shot was slightly better than the OJ Top end was also slightly better but I'd say only by 1 or 2 MPH. All in all not worth listening to the buzzing!! The prop now resides on Charlies 1970 Cuda and it performs fantastic but, that was over the original hand worked Michigan Wheel. What prop is your original? |

Agree with Pete that you should check your steering for play, bends, etc. Only way the prop is making a difference is that you are probably seeing more bow rise, so less of your keel in the water to keep you straight... but a good firm rudder shouldnt care. |

Finally got to test drive the Hurricane with my new 1214 Acme yesterday. Actually the test drive was for new prop, and a new MSD6Al box along with a .000 alingment. I have never been happier with that boat than I was yesterday. The Acme is silky smooth, no harmonics like I've experienced on my old 81 , no ill handling at all. The boat does slow down quicker when coming off throttle but that is expected with the Acmes.
Don't worry Pete, the MSD box is completely hidden, you wouldn't know it's there if I didn't tell you! I couldn't believe how nice it idles now with the box. First time I've installed an MSD in any of my boats but so far well worth the money. |

Any elaboration on checking steering. Being a recent rebuild I am confident in the rudder port and the steering cable clamp. What else could be the culprit? No noise that I could hear that was annoying from the prop. The alternator belt is squealing but hopefully it goes away as this was the first splash of the season.

The bad behavior you describe does not seem prop related. A little bit of coubtersteer during hard deceleration is, of course, normal... but not a “lunge”.
Pete keeps bringing up the incorrect application of a 13” diameter prop on a boat meant to have a 12” (leaving about 1/2”-5/8” clearance) - and on a hollow boat no less- and still thinks the prop was to blame for the buzzing ![]() Have run many 1210’s on that 16’5” hull and it performs measurable better than the comparable OJ- and the original federal cannot hold a candle. Top end of all 3 when in good shape and properly selected is actually pretty close but nothing else runs like an Acme. |

David, Tim doesn't remember that the OJ on the Tique is 13" diameter! ![]() |

Check the helm to see if the wheel turns before the steering cable. It could be loose due to wear. Then at the tiller arm to the cable, fitting see if it's worn. |

So an improperly sized OJ doesn’t cause the same issues as an improperly sized Acme?
![]() Oj has been known to round off their dimensions on their hand finished props... which acme doesn’t do. I bet it’s closer to 12.5” in diameter whereas the 540 is a true 13”. If you really cared how the boat ran you’d have a 1210 on it anyways. ![]() |

I will check the steering components. I have heard such great things about the 1210 on the 16.5 hull. And I have driven some of Reid’s with the acme and steering wasn’t an issue at all. My bet is the helm. Or the cable itself.

Tightened the tiller arm and think it was our problem. Rudder doesn’t have slop anymore. Hoping to drive it on Friday. Rabun county, ga here we come for a little boat trip.
