Hello everybody, I have an 83 SN 2001 and need to get a new flywheel and damper plate. Would those be available at a local parts store ? If not could you point me in the right direction? The engine model # is PRD WR R10. The trans. Is # 10-17-003. Thank you for any suggestions. (It is the Ford 351)

They all get rusty - they are after all not painted and working inside a wet boat. Clean it the best you can throw on a new ring gear. Someone will have a part number for that - it’s a 154 tooth I believe off an early Mustang

New ring gears are pretty inexpensive but they also can be flipped around to use the other side of the teeth. As Gary mentioned, they all get rusty.

You tell the guy at the parts store that you need a flywheel and/or ring gear to fit a 1967 Mustang with a 289 and a 4 speed transmission.

The ring gear is 157 teeth.

Don't tell them you need a flywheel for an automotive 351w because those all had 164 teeth and were a bigger diameter .

Here's a picture with the Ford part number cast into the flywheel There have been a few updated part numbers over the years but they're 157 teeth in the marine application.

The flywheel will probably clean up pretty well and the ring gear you can have removed and replaced or if you have torches, you can heat the ring gear and it will come off pretty easily or you can go "early caveman" with a hammer and chisel and get it off without damaging the flywheel

To put it on, boot the wife/girlfriend out of the kitchen for a half hour or so and heat the ring gear to about 500 degrees in the oven and it'll slip right on the flywheel.

Don't forget the heavy insulated gloves

Awesome , Thank you guys! I think the water was from the rain we had awhile back that had accumulated in the bottom of the boat. Ya I know.

You've been doing some reading of old threads I'd assume.

To answer your question, there are no shims needed and you'll have 3 bolts left over when you're done.

The new damper only uses 3 bolts, the old one used 6.

3 bolts are not an issue at all as far as transmitting the power of the engine to the transmission..

The damper will sit flat on the flywheel unless you put it on backwards

Thank you for that info KENO. Yes I don’t really look at the dates on the threads I read. The problem I have now is the holes on the new flywheel don’t line up with the ones on the crankshaft. Close, but no cigar.
