Does anybody have a problem with moisture while their boat is covered if so what can you use or do to prevent that.
What can I use to clean the upholstery seats

I use Damp Rid, available a Wal Mart. Put a bucket in front and one in back of my SN. You place granules in a colander style basket then place the basket in the bucket. Works great, the granules attract moisture and it goes into the bucket. Mine is covered for 4-5 months and when I uncover it I simply dump the buckets, no mold or mildew.

A breathable cover (like sunbrella) would prevent that. When properly waterproofed (like when new), it wont let water in, but will allow evaporation (if warm/sunny enough). Of course if you put it away wet and it stays shaded/cool, it won’t dry with or without a cover.

I have seen some non-breathable covers (Vinyl etc) do some really ugly things when left on a damp boat.

I have fought mildew on my vinyl for a while. Have tried many products to remove. I just got the marine 31 remover and so far it is head and shoulders above others. I also stepped up to a breathable cover and a covered slip so hopefully my issues will be less going forward as well. I recommend the product but only have a few weeks of experience.

+ 1 on Marine 31. It takes zero effort to apply and it works in minutes.

Marine 31 in action

We keep our boat stored in the driveway under a cover and the marine 31 works like a champ. They also sell a protectant to use along with the mildew remover. Kits on Amazon for around $50

How many years have you been using it ? No cracking or drying of vinyl . You tube video is awesome if it works as says it does.
Feels like I am hanging 10 but in reality - probably hanging 6.

I only found Marine 31 at the beginning of this season. I've only had to use it once to clean up the entire boat. The vinyl was nice and soft after the cleaning and protectant application.

I applied the mildew remover to a rag and dabbed the areas that had mildew and did my best to avoid the stitching. Waited a minute or so and it wiped clean. I then rinsed with a spray bottle of soapy water, then once everything was dry applied the protectant.

Extremely happy with the results. It's been about 5 months and none of the mildew has returned.

I used this kit

I too have had fantastic results with the 31. It removed the mildew when nothing else would work. I ended up with a "lifetime" supply because I wasn't paying attention to what was in my shopping cart when I checked out. I now have 3 - 20oz spray bottles and 3 - 1gal. refills!!

Again, I had to get the Marine 31 out and again, it works fantastic. My X55 has a vinyl deck and anywhere the canvas cover touched the vinyl I had the black mildew. The boat was dry when I laid it up for the winter but the fall/spring temps and humidity in the boathouse was again just right for the mildew to grow. Just as JP linked, Amazon has it listed but you can also
get it direct from Marine 31 Next layup I'm just going to leave the canvas off.

Hey Pete, If you put a pail of Damp Rid in your boat when putting it away for the season you’ll be surprised to find no mold or mildew when you uncover it in the spring. I use 2 pails in my 196 and it works great. Can be found at Wal Mart.

David,
Tried it many years over 40 year on several boats and it never worked for me. Maybe you don't lay your boat up in a over water boathouse? I remember using 3 buckets one year and come spring, all 3 were overflowing.

“Not working” or “working too well”?

A breathable cover sure helps a lot if you don’t already have one. Temp fluctuations will certainly induce more moisture when stored over water... it can be a losing battle once the temps fail to warm sufficiently to cause evaporation.

Tim,
The damp rid did collect the moisture but not enough to stop the mold. You'd need enough of the stuff to drain the lake! An over the water boathouse is humid. Yes, my plain old school canvas cover for the X is breathable. Even the Angola Sunbrella on the Tique didn't work even with the buckets of Damp Rid.

I have a Sunbrella cover and store my boat on a lift under a covered dock. Usually from November-March. The pails are usually 1/2 - 3/4 full of water when spring arrives. I have a feeling that your 9 month layup is hard to overcome but a small fan may help. Also a breathable cover such as Sunbrella would be helpful.
Lots of humidity down here as we recorded 86 inches of rain last year.

I tried the xl damp rid in my camper for a week, went camping and didn’t want the damp rid all over camper so I pulled it out and put it in my garage. That was on Thursday night, came back Monday night and it was basically full. I felt like it was kinda like peeing in the wind.

Also, I'm now leaving the boats uncovered over the layup.
