Some of you may have read my post about damaging my prop at the boat ramp a couple of weeks ago. I just ran my 80' SN with a new Acme 540 today. I had an OJ 4 blade on it and thought I had good merchandise. The dealer told me OJ was the way to go as far as replacement goes...probably because they don't sell Acme's...after reading Keith's thread on the 540 and doing further research that's what I went with and what a huge difference in performance it made! I lost maybe 1-2 mph on top end(still does 42-43)but out of the hole it puts the OJ to shame. If anyone is considering a new prop, give the Acme a try - if you don't like it, you can send it back. That's my .02 worth.

Heath...that seems odd that you would lose any top end? You should have seen a little gain with the 540. Glad you like it!

.. I should have clarified....I did have 2 pa$$engers when I checked the speed. Before it seemed like it would do 45-46, now just under that, but I still can't get over the hole shot.

I gained 3 MPH with my new ACME 540. I had the OJ, 4 blade before. The ACME 540 is great at low and high end. Some serious bite that thing has!

...double M I'd love to head down to Conway and tour the chain again, it's been several years. You're welcome to head up to the Winter Park chain sometime too, although we are a little stale on the sand bar gig you guys have going on.

Dude, be careful! You'll want the #470 on your boat with the 1.23:1 tranny. |

I was using an acme 540 and I switched to an Acme 208 4 bld. I like the wake better with the 4 blade prop. The performance is about the same, real good!

I've got the 1.23 to 1 tranny on my '95. Looking up OJ and ACME prop guides, it seems that the OJ 3-blade #428 13x15.5 and the ACME 3-blade #612 12.5x15.25 are recommended. What is the ACME #470 and should it be the one to go with ?

The 612 isnt in production anymore. Supposedly the 470 (12.5x15 3-blade) outperformed it. I was very happy with mine (before I bent it). I tested it back to back against the Acme 422 (12.5x15.5 4-blade) on 2 different boats and the 470 is a better prop (though it turns 180-200 more RPM).
The OJ 428 looks like its a 4-blade according to their website. My guess is that its comparable to the 422, but the 3-blade should be a better performer. |

tr, thanks for the info! I'll be looking you up when it's time.
One of these days Schick will come out with an EVEN BETTER razor--9 BLADES to give you a SUPER DUPER CLEAN shave. Are props like that too? Will we see 5 blades soon? Followed up by 6 and 7 blade props? |

Like Jimbo pointed out, there are some props out there with more blades. As I understand it, the fewer the blades, the more efficient a prop is. Thats why 3-blades generally have a higher top speed than comparable 4-blades. The new Acme's have a ton of surface area, so they dont give up much (if anything) out of the hole compared to 4-blades. I think I read somewhere on this site that race boats use small 2-blade props and tugboats use large 4 or 5-blades. The analogy seems to make sense. |

I bought mine from New England Correct Craft. I don't know where the rest of the guys got theirs.
I noticed with the 540 prop, it puts pressure on the steering wheel when turning right. You can actually hear it digging in. I feel like my boat is going to suck other boats in when I pa$$ them. Ken |

Delta Propellor has good prices on Acme, plus they give us 5% off and free shipping. Ive had very experience with them. I forget where they list our discount code, though.

...that OJ has seen better days, no doubt. I purchased my 540 from Delta Propeller and received it within 3 days...they were very helpful and I believe all said and done after our discount it came to right at $300.

$300 is the cheapest I've seen the 540. The best I saw was $349.00, shipping not included. You got a fantastic deal, Heath. I don't think any walk-in marine store sells the 540.

when you compare the acme to the oj you must compare the oj xmp version. this is the cnc version. i tried the acme 3 blade #470. my oj xmp 4 blade is a better prop. the hole shot is about equal but the midrange performance of the oj is 300 rpms less at wakeboarding speeds around 20mph. my top end is also 2mph faster with the oj. i use about 3.3 gallons of fuel/hr with the oj. and about 4.1 gallons with the acme. i sent the acme back and bought another oj xmp 4 blade 13x15.5. it also runs smoother.

Got my wacked up OJ from NECC today. Just for the hay of it, I'm going to bring it to East Coast Propeller to see if they can repair it.
