I'm excited to be on the forum and this is my first post. I am looking for a little help on correctly identifying the year of our Correct Craft backyard find. The last registration say its a 1972 Riviera but with everything I could find I'm not so sure, so any information would be appreciated. The only ID numbers I can find is a plate next to the 318 poly engine which says RIV20149. I assume there is a way to upload pictures of this beauty but I haven't figured it out yet. Thanks again for any info anyone can supply.

Greg,
The "RIV" in the serial number confirms it is a Riviera. 72 was right at the time when HIN numbers were started so this one may have just missed the system. However, do check the upper starboard side of the transom for a molded in HIN.

Oh, I have searched and searched for a HIN with absolutely no luck as that area is as smooth as could be. I am new to boats and obviously new to Correct Crafts but from the windshield design and other pictures I have found I am guessing its a 68 or 69 but trust me when I say I could be wrong. Thanks for the reply and help.

The stringer RIV20149 would be the boat's HIN.  Over time and through various states, boats can lose their numbers on titles. It's the government - go figure!

We all would love to see some pics.  You can also link an outside Imgur or Dropbox or Google Photos site.

The tag on the stringer is not a HIN. It was CC's serial numbering system before the USCG developed the standardized system in 72.

"In 1972, The US Coast Guard was given the task of proposing a standardized HIN format as part their new regulations for the safe construction of boats. The HIN was required to be visible on all boats and personal water craft. As a result of the new regulations, the Federal Boat Safety Act was passed in 1972."

If you have a Riviera with a 318 Poly engine, I doubt it's anywhere near a 72.

The 318 Poly was out of production for around 5 years at that point, so if it's a Poly in a 72 something ain't right.(like somebody slipped an old engine into the boat or the boat may be a 67 or 68 or so at the latest since the engines could lag the model year by a year or so)

Maybe it's a 318 LM, the marine version of the 318LA which went into production in 67

I don't know what years the early Riviera was made by CC, but I don't think it was still around in 72.

In about the 70 to 72 years, before the HIN became law, the ID tag was most likely by the throttle, not on a stringer like yours. Another reason for it to be pre 1970.

How legible is that tag? It seems to have one too many digits in it.

Maybe TRBenj will see this and have some info to add.Wink

The 1966 AT Skier had only an ID # on the port stringer - stamped in a simple metal tag. (That was the number Game and Fisheries asked me to fill in the HIN portion of the title application - there was no spot for pre-72 serial numbering system.)  I am not original owner, so who knows what's been lost along the way - but if you have a stringer with a stamped number tag - that's your number.

The metal tag is easy to read RIV20149. I am looking into setting up a google pics so I can include all the photos to help out. Like I stated earlier, I (in my limited knowledge) think its somewhere in the 68 t0 69 range. I will get the pics set up and get a link out so you can see everything that I am seeing. I am in the process of rebuilding the poly engine and have been successful in getting all the parts so far but I think I am going to struggle with a camshaft as the 318 reverse rotation cam I ordered wasn't the correct one. But that's for another post as I have all the numbers off it. Thanks again for all the comments and advice.

Steve,
Yes, you are correct that prior to the 70's and prior to the HIN's in 72, CC ID'd their boats with a simple aluminum tag nailed to the port side stringer next to the engine. They used a alpha numeric system with the first letter(s) being the model of the boat and then numbering which was a numerical sequence. In your case, the leters would be "AT" for Al Tyll Skier. Before the 60's, they used a engraved ID plate that was fastened to a hull port side frame or inside the dog house (engine box).

I’m not much help as the hull id’s I’ve collected are only Mustangs and skiers and maybe a few SN’s... but agree that a poly would make it a 67 or earlier. Pictures of the hardware would help pinpoint it... Joe may know more.

I don't see any of the Icons needed to upload pictures. Thought it may be because I'm a newbie? I hooked up a dropbox so I hope these links work.

I'm going with it being a 1966

Dang Pete!  That’s quite the slalom ski relic in that Poly photo.   Looks like 50’s or 60’s vintage.

If your going to have a old boat then you have to keep things vintage. Found those skis on a local website. If you can ski on those you can ski on anything! Thanks for noticing.

Glasbar

You might have a hard time figuring out the year without getting info from the factory (Art Cozier who pops in here sometimes can dig through old records and find build info, but the virus has impacted his ability to just show up and do it I think)

A search here on CCF in the For Sale and Diaries sections will find a couple of Rivieras with their tag number listed.

One is a 67 ........tag number 1069

Another is a 67 tag number .........20164

Not much consistency between tag numbers

Assuming they knew what year theirs were, you can probably figure yours is a 67 at the latest with your 20149 number

Kinda interesting, the only ones that are in those sections or that are mentioned in threads about the Riviera are 67 or 68 models with a fair amount of guesswork in those threads, before the name was resurrected again in the 80's for a short time.

I guess you could say it wasn't the most popular model they built Wink

What's the camshaft issue you're having ? Maybe trying to find an RR 318 Poly camshaft

Thanks for the info on the year! I think I will call it a 67 unless I get some evidence that says otherwise..... So like I stated before I am currently rebuilding the poly engine. Everything is going well until I needed to find a camshaft. Its a 318 poly reverse rotation engine and I thought I found the correct one and ordered it only to find that the lobes were in totally different orders. You can see from the picture as the original one is on the right and the one I ordered on the left. I have also attached a picture of the end of the original camshaft with the numbers E7624M and 622U. If anyone can help on sending me in the right direction to find one of these I would be grateful.

I think your new cam is for a later LM 318 engine and not the poly head 318.

The cams will both slide into your engine and have the same firing order, but the difference is the arrangement of the cam lobes/valves so one won't work in place of the other

On yours the valves are arranged   I E I E I E I E.

On the later LM engines they're arranged   E I I E  E I I E ( they borrowed a page from the small block Chevy design book)

I don't have a clue where to find a new 318 poly Reverse Rotation cam these days but you might try these guys in the link unless you've already  talked to them  Wink

or here's a link to a FB page  for poly engines, maybe you could ask there
