I have the Holley Throttle Body, with Protec ignition. I didn’t know this 2 weeks ago, so I appreciate the info I have learned from you all.

My boat has been sitting for 2 years. Just got it from my brother, after he had a backfire and didn’t bother repairing the exhaust.

My question- As I am getting things ready for the water, I thought I had a carburetor and I was going to rebuild it. But, this throttle body I have, which looks a lot like a carb, can it be rebuilt? Can I (should I) tear it apart and clean it up? It has rust on the butterflys /flaps, so I have tried to do research on Protec, but I’m not diagnosing a problem, just wanting to clean or rebuild it.

Any advice is appreciated. I see the conversion carburetors & distributors, which I might have to do... but will try this first if it is worth my time. If you see this as a waste of my time, I appreciate your experience and advice :)

Thanks!

If your ProTec and/or throttle-body electronic fuel injection need work, you may be out of luck.  The parts for both units are "NLA" or No Longer Available.  I had the same configuration on my 1994 Ski Nautique.  The ProTec failed and the TBI had a bad injector.  I ended up retro-fitting back to carb and distributor.  The conversion wasn't overly difficult to do, but it took a couple of Saturdays for me to do it.  Send me a P.M. and I can walk you through the process if you want.

Another option is to remove the injectors and take them to an injector shop and see if they can do a clean / service.  That may keep you running for a while.
