I have gas coming from the top of my carb on the port side stern end were there was a red seal type substance. The boat is a 93 sport with holly carb. Any ideas?

Rodney,
Sounds like the leak is at the welch plug? Is it the small round disc on the float bowl?

If so, it's a common spot for a leak. Clean up the area and use some epoxy on top of the plug. A aluminum filled epoxy is best.

Welch plugs:

If you really want to know what's in there here's a picture of that so called "welch" plug and the O ring that's on it.

The O ring gets old and brittle and leaks

if you want to pull the plug, you'll destroy it so it's either replace the bowl or epoxy over the plug.

You should probably epoxy over the other 3 plugs that are on your bowls too, since they're all the same age and maybe getting ready to leak when you least expect it. Wink

Plenty of people have epoxied over their plugs with no issues as long as the prep was good.

Also what is the purpose of having a plug there and why aren't they replaceable?

The hole is only used once and that's for machining the hole directly behind the plug. After the machining is done the hole is plugged. Drill bits can't go around corners. Big smile

4 bolts/machine screws and it's off.

You may or may not destroy the gasket, if you do, you'll need to take the secondary metering plate off to replace the gasket. It takes a clutch head screwdriver (or the right sized flat blade will work for us backyard hacks)

Then there's the O ring on the fuel transfer tube that may or may not need to be replaced, they can get pinched when reinstalling the bowl.

Then you have to swap the internals (float, needle and seat assembly, spring, baffle plate to the new bowl.

If you have the extra parts on hand, you won't need them but if you don't you'll need them. I'd have them on hand .Wink

Then hope the front bowl doesn't start to leak after you've replaced the secondary.

You can find plenty of Holley how to stuff on the internet

Ok thanks. I might just replace the whole carb instead it sounds like there's plenty of old gaskets and other pieces that are bound to fail. My son in law is a manager at auto zone so I'll get a discount and it sounds much easier to replace than rebuild.

I think you can handle the float bowl swap Rodney................and I know you can handle an epoxy job. Wink

Even if you want to call the epoxy job "temporary", it'll get you running and last for a lot of years.

Like mentioned earlier, lots of people have done it.

You should have a 4160 model then the list number is what's important.

I think someone already sealed both plugs previously with a red colored sealer however the leaking one literally dissolved whatever it was.

50469-1 is the list number

red colored sealer has images of RTV dancing through my mind Wink

Whatever it might be, see if you can clean it off and epoxy both plugs and the front 2 also while you're at it. it's worth the try.

It’s scary when you have gas leaking from the carburetor into the intake manifold. Then being out on the water can un-nerving. I wouldn’t trust any epoxy sealer since the fuel presser is on the inside of the bowl and you’re trying to fix the problem from the outside. Holley does have the primary and secondary bowls listed on their website if you want to replace.

But then I was in the same situation with my old Holley leaking. After replacing secondary twice, I received a new Holly for Father’s Day.  I’m a penny puncher but on this I would just bite the bullet and buy a new Holley if it’s possible. I just kept putting it off.

I too have seen those leaky Welch plugs sealed up with jb weld last for years and years. Hardly a reason to replace a carb, imho.

I have just completed the epoxy job and I am already looking at new holley and normally it would already be ordered but I bought her last year and already. Did trailer bunks, steering cable, throttle and shift cables, and just had new pcm 80a tranny installed after old one started leaking last September so 5k in repairs already way past "BOAT".
