I’ve had my 82 SN for 5 years it’s been a great boat.  On one of my last outings the transmission seemed to have slipped pulling a skier on the take off, then seemed run fine pulling other skiers.  The trans goes in forward and reverse as it should but seems to have a delay engaging at slow speed or take off intermittently.  There is oil on the trans dip stick.  Will a change of the trans fluid solve my problem or am I headed toward a rebuild?  What’s a ballpark cost on a rebuild?  Thanks as always!

Put a little more fluid in and try again.

Is the level somewhere up near the full mark?

Here's an easy to read blurb from a Borg Warner manual on checking your level

As suggested above, put more oil in it.  It won't hurt anything to go up to 1/2" above the full mark.  Check the rubber expansion plug on the dipstick.  If it is mushroomed at the top of the rubber sleeve, replace it because it's giving you false readings by not going all the way down into the case.  You will be astounded when you see the price of a new dipstick.  I build a much-improved version of the dipstick that I sell for $50.00. All metal,no stupid rubber sleeve.

A "delay" sounds like a possible cable mis-adjustment.
Keep it....from sinkin'

Or an internal hydraulic pressure leak,  It easy to check the pressure if he has a pressure gauge that goes to at least 150 psi and the fittings to connect it to a 1/4" female pipe thread.  Pressure will be lower if the oil is hot.  I rebuild Warner "Velvet Drive" units for my "Play Money"

Thanks Art!  Do you have a link you can send me to find your dipstick?

Does all this mean you don't know what your oil level is or should be?

If you take something like a wooden dowel about 1/4 in in diameter and plenty long so you can't lose it in the hole, make a mark about 3 inches from the end and stick it in the hole.

The level should be right up to that mark.

if you have plenty of fluid, then like Art said, it's probably internal issues

Haha!  The only kind of "link" I would know how to deal with would be those that make up a chain.  Right now I don't have any of them made up, but when I make another batch of them I could send you a photo or post a photo here. (If I can figure out how to do it)  My brain is too old to understand any of this digital stuff.

I think this is a picture of what he's talking about right here. This engine was in Art's hands pretty recently. I'll write more in another thread, so as not to hijack this one.
