I cut the rope around the post on a 45, they will not go in the nut no matter the force applied.
Then i cut the rope to fit the nut, the rudder needs a lot of manipulation to get thru the first 2 ropes and cuts the third preventing the rudder from bottoming out. At this point the rudder turns smooth but snug. The rudder post is 1 1/4 dia. I think i got the wrong rope, maybe not a stock rudder ? For laughs the propshaft packing gland has no drag on the shaft at all. I removed the shaft and verified the stack of tapered washers and the stainless crush ring. Reinstalled, spins like butter ( the shaft has to be held up to coupler or it will slide down. One thing i noticed was a fair bit of play between the shaft and cutlass, i didn't mic the shaft. Shaft and cutlas all new. I have never seen so much play in new parts or had trouble with rope seals before. It gets better, i installed the rudder with the old rope seals just to check the shims and look for any stand out issues. It steers backwards, i read the directions when it was installed, and i think the cable just needs to be reloaded on the bottom. No email/tracking # from holley, i think the only guy that makes the floats is off with the corona and his apprentice can't make them on his own yet. It looks like May or June sea trials. |

What size packing was it? 1/4 inch or 3/16 inch? I've seen 5/16 inch packing that some guy was trying (unsuccessfully) to squeeze into his gland nut. In this instance -- size really does matter.

The packing should not be getting past (oozing) the packing nut. You said you didn't do any measuring but I feel you should. The packing nut should be a pretty tight fit around the rudder shaft.

Pictures of the rudder would be good. Like you said on the backwards steering, swap where the cable enters the helm to correct that problem. |

Johnny- no idea what size rope, cut and installed it's already smaller than the packing nut i.d. at the top.
8122- the rope was trying to ooze thru like you said but the rudder was far from bottoming out, the machined sqaure never cleared the top of the nut I will dis assemble measure and note all of it. Keno- i will photograph the rudder, it's probably stock with the tuning fin (trim tab) only reason i said it might different because the port didn't fit the hull pocket in the corners by just a scooch, had to round off the corners on the grinder so it would lay flush, and it's thicker than the pocket is deep by less than a 1/16. Thanks guys, i'll get on it early tomorrow,

The new rope smashed up as it was leaned towards being 5/16 x 5/16, the original rope as worn out as it is measured 3/16 x 3/16. I'll need whatever size you guys think it is, and i would appreciate suggestions on type/namebrand and where to get it ordered up. Thank you.

That looks like the 2160 rudder with the adjustable tab that's a replacement for the 11A, see link
Regular old fashioned flax works fine for the rudder since it isn't spinning at thousands of RPM Just get it from one of the places where you've been getting things
