Been a long time since I’ve been on this forum…I mostly hang in the Corvette forums now, miss this place!
I thought I would share what I’ve done to try and get some more life out of the Sherwood water pump on my 92 sport nautique. It has around 560 hours. I replaced the impeller in the WP a few years ago and thought it would be fine another season…nope! The hub spun in the water pump last week! Luckily I immediately noticed the change in exhaust note, saw the temp start to climb and shut it down. Pulling it apart I did not like how the wear plate and housing looked. The wear plate is readily available on skidim, but the housing is either a couple hundred from random sellers or 750 plus tax and shipping for a new water pump, ouch! This motivated me to attempt to get some more life out of the housing. I will update this thread if it is a success! I used my prior impeller (that hadn’t spun) to spin different grits of sand paper to smooth it out. Had some really bad grooves in the center hub…could very easily feel it with your finger … I figure this added friction contributed highly to the impeller hub spinning. Hammered a bolt into the hub so I could chuck it in a drill… |

So, put it all together and got it in the boat today. Before the pump must have not been doing its job near as well as it is now. The boat was super quiet (extra flow through the exhaust) and the temp gauge was very very slow to come off of 120…
Looking at the impeller that “spun” I think I see some other causes here. The impeller, even though it’s the exact same part number/box I just got, the spun one is noticibly thicker (at least 1/8”) and the tips of the fingers are thicker…. The newest one matches the one prior to the one that spun exactly. FWIW both the spun one and new one I just put in are Sherwood from skidim: SHE-09959K. I think the spun impeller was wrong/out of spec. This contributed to the excessive wear of the housing I believe and the eventual “spin”. Anyway it’s working great so far and am very pleased! |
