My first thought was indeed that they had an electronic ignition mounted, as it doesn't need the ballast, but it's a regular point distributor...

I think the resister was used when your coil didn't have a built in resistor. Getting out of what I know but I think most modern coils have resistance built in. Someone here will weigh in with real information, probably still in bed!

That’s a quick water drain (so you don’t have to take a pipe thread all the way out). They work fine but you have to make sure they don’t get clogged up with silt and scale.
Probably better to just use a pipe plug since the front portion of the drain appears to be missing. |

I thought it was a port to the oil gallery, but a waterjacket drain makes more sense. Thanks Phatsat!

Probably a stupid question, but where do I need to connect the positive Battery lead on the starter for the 454? On the same terminal as the yellow/red wire from the engine harness?

Thanks Keno! that's clear.
It doesn't show the ballast resistor, would it be mounted between the + side of the coil and the distributor? That would mean I need a wire somewhere from the "starting" circuit to short the ballast when starting? The carb also comes with an electric choke, this one should be connected to a 12 volt source that's not the coil or alternator (according to the manual) I'm guessing somewhere on the purple wire? (before the coil)

Also, my neutral safety switch is not connected, that should be connected on N°3 yel/red?

Those PCM boys didn't exactly label things too good ![]() Here's the diagram with the choke heater element and the NSS pointed out and then the location of the ballast resistor is drawn in PCM didn't use the "I" terminal on the start relay on their point equipped engines, coil power was always through the ballast resistor, but you could run a wire from the "I" terminal on the relay to the coil (+) terminal for that little extra boost when starting the engine.

Time for an update:
We installed the shaft and shaft coupler and it went very smooth, thanks to the shared information on this forum! Cleaned up the shaft end and made sure there were no burs. Glued the key in place with 2 drops of superglue and heated the shaft coupler on an induction stove top. used a (wooden) clothes hanger to transport it into the boat and used welding gloves to tap it in place. Did the engine alignment which wasn't complicated but it was a bit of a task due to the weight of the 454. took us a good hour of fidgeting and moving the block until we got it set up correctly. Connected the cooling hoses, Exhaust manifolds, exhaust hoses, muflers, Bilge pump, fuel tank, blower, etc etc. To our surprise, everything on the non-engine side of the electrics worked from the first time, very happy with that, seeing as we redid the wiring on the dash with no prior experience. We tried to crank the engine over but nothing really happened, you could hear and feel the solenoid and relay clicking, but the engine doesn't turn. I took out the starter for a bench test (to make sure I didn't have a faulty ground or wiring) but had the same issue. The Bendix gets into position but the starter motor doesn't turn. So I opened it up to see what was going on inside and found this: ![]() So I'm out looking for a new starter. From a previous thread we determined that I have a standard rotation engine, as its mounted on the rear, that must mean I have a CCW turning starter. (thanks to Keno's schedule he posted in another post) I'm looking around and I'm finding this starter: https://www.amazon.com/Rareelectrical-Reduction-Compatible-Mercruiser-1975-1977/dp/B008Y3O5C4?ref_=nav_signin It says: 12v, CCW, replaces Delco 1998316. My starter is a DELCO 1998316. is there something else I need to check? anyone has experience with this brand? I don't have a good picture of how the boat looks right now but i'll post some more soon. Cheers, Lenny |

I guess that's the visual of "my starter took a dump"
![]() That looks like the newer PMGR replacement for the original and cross references as a replacement for the original number. And with your top mount, rear entry starter setup, it turns the right way for a normal rotation engine. No experience with Rare Electrical, but they've been around for a while, |

Hello All,
I received the starter a couple days ago, but sadly it's not the correct one.
In the add however it shows the correct starter in the picture AND the AC DELCO part number is the same. The starter has the same bolt pattern, but its missing the nose cone and it's a lot smaller. |

The new one is a PMGR starter. it's smaller, lighter and more powerful along with drawing less current due to not having to energize a set of windings to create a magnetic field. You say the bolt pattern is the same, I'd install it and give it a spin and see what happens. You night be pleasantly surprised
