Happy New Year, just checking to see how many put the boat in the water for a Polar Bear Day adventure?
I will state, I have not done it in 30 years now but the last time we did it was a balmy Foggy day, 34* outside and after the ski I was so cold my arms would not let me swim, it was like they were made of lead and I have been a strong swimmer all my life, swam through college and played waterpolo. The rules for the Polar Bear Club were tough, you were only allowed to use a swim suit and flotation vest. No Wet Suits or Dry suits allowed. If you did it they awarded you with a Polar Bear Patch which for some reason we had to have. I remember one guy, had never skied in his life and tried to ski for that polar bear patch, by the time they made him quit his skin was purple. I am sure there was lots of alcohol involved. They did have a bon fire on shore and people passing the Whiskey bottle to help you warm up. Lots of good fun and laughs but I am 30 years removed now. A buddy went out this morning, a recent cancer survivor, he did the Polar Bear Swim in 49* water and 48* temps to start his year off with a bang. I hope the year is starting off great for everyone. Had the weather been a little warmer and no so windy I would have thought about it. Temps were to be in the upper 20's this morning so I went down to the dock to plug in the Hood light (on a timer) in the 88'. Looked down the shoreline and saw a few of my neighbors in Bath robes walking down their walkway so I'm guessing they did a polar plunge. Temps in the mid 40's. No idea what the water temp is but its gotta be mid 40's. Didn't see any post on the Lake Norman NYD Barefoot runs so I'm guessing they didn't do it this year??

The NYD tournament happened. In fact, for the first time, they live streamed it. Pretty good coverage for first time. Two cameras (one on dock, one in boat) good audio, contestant ID graphic. Nice job. Fun to watch. 10 yr old kid entered men's division went for 3:05. Not too shabby. Another guy did his run bacerds. Not sure of winners/ scores, didnt watch the whole thing. No CCF or close associate participation this year. |
