I’ve been sitting in this project for a long time. My sub dash panel is cracking to pieces, so after years of looking I finally got a replacement. Today I went to dive in and I don’t see a way to get the little red lights out without totally re-wiring. I’ll take suggestions! Not sure what to do now.

You have to cut all the indicator light wires, pull out the lights from the front and stick them in the new panel and do a buttload of splicing with butt connectors or your choice of ways to hook the wires back together.
Not a fun job

I was hoping the lights had some secret disconnect.
Maybe it’s easier to swap to rocker style switches? Unless these push button ones are special in some way. Perhaps the wires would not reach in the switch was less deep. It’s not necessarily the work I’m afraid of, it’s the fear of not getting it back together correctly. |

The originals are switches and breakers. If replacing with switches, you’ll need to add breakers or fuses for electrical protection.

When I did my dash 4 years ago. I cut the Led light wires
and number them so that I can put them back correctly. At the time, I use butt
connectors that press down onto the wires without removing the
installation. Since then I had no issues
with those connections. They now have heat shrink butt connectors that will solder
the cut wires back together. |

Did you guys consult a wiring diagram at all, or just lots of tape with notes?
I’m not sure where I’d get a wiring diagram. Or if I could even read it. |

Here's your chance to find out link to 89 dash wiring It'll probably make you want to pull out the tape and write lots of notes ![]() The fuel gauge and hour meter locations in the diagram and your dash don't agree with each other. I think your dash is the way they were built

When I cut the wires, I used wire number marking tape. Made it
simple to keep it straight on what you’re cutting. But there are other ways to
label the wires when you cut them. Just keep track in the order you pull and
cut so you get them back in the right location. The only other items you need
to remove from the panel unless you have a radio, is the alarm buzzer and the
ignition switch but they come out from behind the dash. Even though I had the electrical
drawing of the dash, I didn’t used it. |
