I had an 86 Nautique for 21 years and the sound was one of the things I loved about it the most. I moved off the lake,  Stupidly sold the boat. 3 years later I am back on the lake, looking for another boat. My question, How much different is the sound of an 1989 Nautique which has single exhaust. I'm looking for another 1986, but have not been succesful. Thanks for any imput.

My 2002 Sport Nautique is much quieter than my 1980 was.  I guess I could remove the muffler and install a Y from Nautique parts and run just wet exhaust hose.

My 68 Holman Moody has cooper pipes with no mufflers and sounds amazing.  Holman Moody's have a unique sound from the manifolds.

Does the Y without muffler sound similar to to a dual with mufflers ? Is it louder ? Like the sound of dual with mufflers. Hate just loud and obnoxious.
Feels like I am hanging 10 but in reality - probably hanging 6.

There is NOTHING in the world that sounds as good as a 70's up into the mid 1980's Ski Nautique. I completely understand!! Even my mom made a comment one time about how there is nothing that sounds like that "OLD BOAT"!!!
Finally got my 1985 Ski Nautique running the right way. At idle, it is pure music from those exhaust pipes. BUT....when you get it up around 37 mph and those secondaries on that 4 barrel carb atop of that 351 start making music, THERE IS NOTHING that will put a smile on your face quite like it!!!
Not really sure when they switched from a dual exhaust to a single exhaust. I guess they call it "progress".
Keep looking...something will pop up!!! Good luck!!

Shouldn't be too hard to find a boat from the years you prefer, but finding one in decent shape is a challenge.

I have an old boat with straight pipes and great sound.  But for my ski boat I'm very glad to have a "modern" muffled exhaust (if 27 years old is still considered modern).  I test drove a much louder version of my boat and while I loved it, at the same time when I think of all the hours with family and friends in the boat the quieter version works better for everyone.  And it's not like the muffled boats are anywhere near silent, but definitely the rumble and roar are gone.

I know the fisherman and snoozing families appreciate it when out early morning too.

Several years ago, traded my 76 tique with the straight through copper (or stainless, or whatever) dual exhausts for a 96 invertaflo single exhaust.  Miss the sound of the tique.   tique sounds

My 1986 Silver Nautique (#49) has a Chevy 350.  After finding the original owner on FB (you on here Mike G?), he said it had a 454 in it, and they swapped it out with the 350.  Love the sound of that boat, and I'm only 70...

I wouldn't have thought a 454 was an option on an '86 Ski Nautique.  But then again since they were putting them in the BFN's maybe you just had to order it that way.

A shocking and great ending to my story of replacing my 1986 ski Nautique. I’m still in touch with the guy that I sold this boat too, and he was helping me trying to find another boat after looking at many boats online and six boats in person, the guy sent me a text on Friday, asking me if I would like to buy my old boat back of course I said yes, and now all is right in the world again he said that he realized how much I love that boat after only being willing to look at the same year and color a great ending to my story
I will post photos of the boat when I can figure out how

That's AWESOME!!! SO GLAD YOU WERE ABLE TO BUY YOUR BOAT BACK!!!!!

I lost our 1985 Ski Nutique when my parents sold the lake house lock, stock, and barrel. INCLUDING THE BOATS!!!
Needless to say, I was HEARTBROKEN...

Went to the lake house one last time to collect personal belongings with my dad. I slipped a note under the winter cover stating that if they were ever going to sell the boat, I would definitely be interested!!

Guess what? About a week after the closing, I received a phone call. It was the new owner. Stated he already had a ski boat and wanted to get this one back to me. Ended up making a deal and for my 59-1/2 birthday, I went and picked up the boat!!!

Kind of a bittersweet moment as I knew that was probably the last time I would be at the lake house we enjoyed for almost 40 years...

BUT...AT least I had the boat back in my possession.

She needed to have the carb rebuilt along with a new Mallory ignition module, new ignition coil, new plug wires, and new belts. I will be rebuilding the raw water sea pump in the next couple of weeks or so...

She's back tin the family and running like a champ!!!

What is it about these boats?!?!?!?!

It kinda gets into your blood!!!!!!
