Auto/electronic stern light

   I recently bought a 2001 SAN and it has, from the factory, an electronic stern light mounted on the starboard side just in front of the rear hatch. It has been disconnected and a seperate plug in type light has been mounted right beside it (perko I think) Is anyone familiar with the electronic pop up light and was it a factory option? 

It appears to have worked just like an automatic vehicle antenna. It may even work, not sure.
