Ok, so ever since I've owned my 85 2001 I've had this electrical problem. I start out with a fully charged battery, by the end of the day, it barely turns over my boat, and the boat is constantly dying when putting it into gear. I had my alternator checked, it's putting out 14 volts, I even replaces the battery connectors. My dash voltage was intermittant, so I added a new ground to dash loop, replaced ignition key, getting a solid 12- but aren't I supposed to be getting 14? Where is the weak link at this point?

If you have the older alternator with the external regulator, I would suspect the regulator. You need to put a volt meter between the battery and the + battery terminal and check for a voltage draw. (battery disconnected, engine off)
You as well need to check for 14 volts at the battery while the engine is running battery (reconnected). The alt. may check good on the bench, but a bad ground wire or something may not let it charge the battery. The older points type condensder can cause a issue as well I believe...But I would have thought it'd be burnt up by now... |

Gabriel, When you ran the new ground wire to the dash, where did you connect the other end? To the battery? To the engine block? Have you checked all of your electrical connections and connectors? The main neg. cable to the engine block? When I went after and cleaned up all the wiring on my 77, I found lots of green (copper) and white (lead) corrosion in connectors. I cleaned them all up and used dielectric grease to prevent future corrosion. I found that I picked up 1.3 volts to the dash. Regarding the charging, you do need to check to see if you are getting the nominal 14 volts charging to the battery just like Mack said. It really doesn't matter what the gauge says. Take the volt reading from the battery and work back from there to find out were you're loosing it.

Gabriel, did you check the output of the alternator at the B+ (Alt) terminal while it was on the engine and running? If not, do this first. Then see if full voltage is reaching your battery. If your boat is still running an external regulator I'd definitely upgrade to a newer internal regulator type alternator. Write back if you need more info. Brian

ok, well it is the newer style alternator with regulator, and I guess I will check voltage on B+ terminal tomorrow. The wire that comes off of there is a very tiny orange wire. I will check on both end of that and see if I'm losing anything there.
