be warned the 80-81 windshields are different than the 73-79 so don't expect it to fit teh 70's models.

Are the differences in the windshield significant enough to effect the fit? Will it really be that tight?

yes it effects it enough that you won't really like it at all. The pleats in the cover are about 6" forward of where they need to be for the 79 and later models. It will fit it just doesn't fit very well around the windshield and the reinforcements.
