Has anyone ever attempted to rebuild a Hour Meter? I have a "80 Nautique and the hour meter recently quit. It makes a clicking sound like it's trying to turn the counter, but the Tach needle jumps as if there's a short. I would like to keep it original (along with actual hours).

Is your hour meter its own unit or is part of the tachometer? My seperate hour meter also recently quit working with similiar sounds. In fact prior to it not working at all, it worked too good...it would only take about 45 minutes to read one hour! I cleaned and tightened the grounding to the meter, with mixed results...worked a bit better, but still not accurately. Then, my tach quite about a week later. I then decided to purchase a new tach with integral hour meter and put a depth guage where the original hour meter resided. All is good now.
Usually the guages are sealed and opening them up to get to the internals will ruin the gauge casing. I suggest you replace the hour meter or hour meter/tach and record the accumulated hours in a log that is dated, and signed to show any prospective new owner. you could even keep the old guage as proof. This is what I have done. I suppose you could also put a 12v power source on the new hour meter and leave the power applied until the guage reads the same as the old gauge, then install it in your boat...could take several weeks/months! |

1000 hours you would have to leave it hooked up for 42 days. that would be funny
