Does anybody replace the clutch plates by yourselves? If so, would you kindly let me know how dificult was that?
My SN1989 broke a transmission, and now I cannot release a gear, that means it keeps going forward even I release the throttle lever. Now I cannot stop my boat without cut off the engine. And now my boat go forward even I put it reverse. Before I face with that symptom, I have felt that clutch plates are slipping and boat sometime didn't speed up as linear as the engine rev.. I think we can purchase most of transmission parts from SKIDIM, and I also have maintenance manual for PCM Power Plus. Please advise if you had have same experience. Best Regards, Ryo Matsushima |

Allthough I have never rebuilt or opened up a Velvet Drive, I am sure anyone with wrenching exerience and a bit above average skills can successfully rebuild the tranny. You may find that you need to buy some specialized tools such as pullers and bushing tools. Other than that, just pay attention to what you are doing and make sure everything is clean and pre-lubricated when you put it back together.

I found the trans manual in the reference section of Correct Craft Fan very helpful.
It's been said already to pay close attention, this is the most important thing. I replaced my clutches and it was farly easy. Good Luck! |

Be very careful it is not as easy as it appears. Thier are many moving parts of the transmission that all function together to make the transmission function.

As an amature, I rebuilt an automatic transmisson out of a Plymouth. I can tell you now from experience: Have an appropriate place to work, pay CLOSE attention to where the parts go (make notes and tags), have patience, and remember the three most important rules-
1) Keep all the parts very clean 2) Keep all the parts very clean 3) Keep all the parts very clean Pretend you are a brain surgeon in an operating room. Keep things sterile. One spec of sand and your tranny is ruined. Other than that - I say go for it! |

I have found a digital camera is handy in jobs like these, take lots of photos during disassembly.

The 89 Ski had the power plus trans and it is different than the velvet drive trans. The return springs need a special tool to compress them in the forward and reverse clutch drums. when you do tear down the trans pay close attention to the rear porion of the trans housing as they can be groved and cause slippage and warpage of the clutch plates.
