My 1991 Ski Nautique was burned in a garage fire. All that remained was the motor and the floor from the engine back. What is truly amazing is that the gas tank survived the fire with gas in the tank. Anyone know what material the tanks is made of that makes it resistant to fire?

I beleive its polypropylene. It probably survivrd because it was full of liquid that kept the tank from reaching a high enough temp to ignite. If you take a paper cup (not plastic or styrofoam) fill it with water and put an egg in it you can boil that egg in an open fire. The water never exceeds 212 degrees and paper doesn't ignite until it gets to 450.

Polypropylene melts at 320 degrees F, the fire was a lot hotter than 320 degrees it melted every aluminum component in the garage which means that the temperature was in excess of 1000 degree f. The interesting part is the tank did shrivel up to about half of it's original size.

not sure what your tank was made but my '86SN tank did not fair so well. It was full of fuel and at the top right corner the tank split and thats when it "really got burning good"
