Anyone seen radiator hose used for exhaust before? My Mustang appears to have original exhaust that needs replacing. The "s" shaped hose that connects to the exhaust manifold is soft rubber and looks like radiator hose. I looked into converting to exhaust hose with elbows, but it will take up more space.

Bruce, Why do you feel that a couple rubber elbows and some straight sections of tube will take up more room?

You can bend pipe my like my friend did on his american skier, or go to napa and buy 4 of these hoses.

Tim , the radiator hose is a quick and temporary fix, after a year the bottom will get soft, and this is no place for a leak. Napa can supply you with S/S elbows in 3in for 35.00 or heavy guage galvanized for 18.00. The S/S will last 100 years the galvanized only 25.
The pic of the American Skier exhaust leaves a lot to be said for quality and appearance, looks like sh#t......... |

I agree, the pipe looks like chit, but it sounds good. As far as using the hose, don't you think a radiator gets hotter on a car than the boat exhaust?

Tim, just relateing what happen with my boat and the hose I used were heavy duty , after a short while the 90 that laid in the bottom, bilge, got real soft .
I went back with the wire type rubber and 3" 60 deg. and a 90 deg. galvanized back to back w/hose in between. This took care of the 30 deg tilt on the motor and the 90 to lay flat in the bilge......... |

Did you use some metal piping to go down into the 90 as far as possible?

My boat still has the original hoses, and there is no wire in the walls that I can see or feel.

Tim, this i do not doubt , but a small leak can pump a lot of water into the bilge real quick,,,,,
After the Hi Tek install I had to rework everything anyway, so i probably went overkill on mine , but I only wanted to do it once.. Now may be the time to pull yours and at least do a once over for soft spots and abrasion,as your exaust outlets are close if not below water line, just a heads up as to the gravity of a leak in the exhaust...... |

If the time ever comes that you require a hull survey from a registered surveyor, he will not go for any exhaust component that isn't rated as such. I have gone through this with my 54 because it was of a age that my insurance company wanted a survey. I ended up removing one of the floor boards so he could see the name/rating on the rubber tubing. I also had to disconnect my siphon bailer.
There is a reason that components shouldn't be used for funtions they are not designed for. |

Boatdr, I dug my foam out back in July, the exhaust hoses are in good shape and no leaking. I guess I'm lucky.

Pete, I hadn't seen those. They might work. We have a West Marine in Portland, I'll check them out. The ones I had been looking at, made the s too big. |

Good question, I haven't looked under it, but it feels like holes and blisters. The photo makes it look like some sort of joint, but I don;t think it is. The exhaust was covered in foam, so I guess it's original. I'm surprised it lasted so long. |

My mustang had 2 inch copper elbows silver solder brazed onto a vertical piece of copper pipe. I was considering that the orignal setup, anyone else ever see it like that? I think I sent them to the junkyard when I converted over to 3 inch manifolds and wire reinforced tubing. I bought at that time at least two 3 inch fiberglass 90's that I ended up not using so if anyone needs marine exhaust elbows for 3 inch hose let me know I will sell them for less than half of what I paid for them. The copper ones while probably not original were at least cool should have saved them for a fan...

Bruce, I like Joe's posting with the copper. Very sound and no chance taking with radiator hose. The best thing is it looks original and may have been what was in the boat! The only problem will be to match the size. You never mentioned what size of hose was in it! Although rare, 2 1/2" copper fittings are made.

2.5" ID. Two of those elbos you posted may work if their turn is tight enough.

Bruce, Here's a 2 1/2" exhaust elbow. I finally found one! The rubber ones I posted previously are 3". Will this work? It is a Barr Marine part.
ehaust elbow It's listed as a 90 degree but I looked it up and it is less than 90. It would match the backwards slope of the exhaust manifold better! Look for part # 20-0086P Barr Marine |

That may be perfect. If I have enough room, maybe that and some ribbed exhaust hose would give me enough of a bend to run a stright section from the transom to the elbo.
I have the larger V8 style motor box, so I may have enough room. Thanks for the info. |

I am faced with the job of fixing the exhaust system on the Mustang.
Any drawbacks to replacing the missing exhaust hose section with SS pipe (like in the picture in the previous post )? |

OHHH MYYYY GODDDDD, what is that, or should I say "who would do such a thing"?????? PO....
I can only imagine the weight of all that IRON. With the current price of scrap iron, a trip to the recycler could give you a good start towards the purchace price of a " correct exhaust system" This is just my humble opinion tho...Boat dr |

My friend works in a muffler shop and can bend/size any pipe I need.
Seemed like it would be simpler just to replace the missing rubber piece with the pipe, and hopefully the baffled hose coming off the engine would still provide enough flexibility to deal with vibration. Thanks for the comments! |

Glenn, With replacment manifolds there always seems to be a issue because the outlets on the risers are never in the same spots as the original. I would just get rid of the corregated flex and run hard wall rubber to the exsisting splice under the floor (or all the way back to be safe). You have several inches of room to the inside of the engine box so the bend should be gradual and easy. The more splices with hose clamps you make is just adding to the number of potential leaks.
How about some more pictures? We'd love to see more! I also couldn't help noticing that you may need some stringer work soon. |

Along with what Pete said, this stuff is the only type hardwall I've found that will make a turn like you have. That's probably common sense to some, but I went through a bit of trial and error to come away with that little slice of info. LOL
