Exhaust hose

Anyone seen radiator hose used for exhaust before? My Mustang appears to have original exhaust that needs replacing. The "s" shaped hose that connects to the exhaust manifold is soft rubber and looks like radiator hose. I looked into converting to exhaust hose with elbows, but it will take up more space.

Tim, It's a straight 6 so Bruce only needs 2 elbows

Tim , the radiator hose is a quick and temporary fix, after a year the bottom will get soft, and this is no place for a leak. Napa can supply you with S/S elbows in 3in for 35.00 or heavy guage galvanized for 18.00. The S/S will last 100 years the galvanized only 25.
The pic of the American Skier exhaust leaves a lot to be said for quality and appearance, looks like sh#t.........

Tim, just relateing what happen with my boat and the hose I used were heavy duty , after a short while the 90 that laid in the bottom,bilge, got real soft .
I went back with the wire type rubber and
3" 60 deg. and a 90 deg. galvanized back to back w/hose in between.
This took care of the 30 deg tilt on the motor and the 90 to lay flat in the bilge.........

Yes 3" S/S that was not the problem area, the 90 was..........

Tim, this i do not doubt , but a small leak can pump a lot of water into the bilge real quick,,,,,
After the Hi Tek install I had to rework everything anyway, so i probably went overkill on mine , but I only wanted to do it once..
Now may be the time to pull yours and at least do a once over for soft spots and abrasion,as your exaust outlets are close if not below water line,just a heads up as to the gravity of a leak in the exhaust......

Boatdr, I dug my foam out back in July, the exhaust hoses are in good shape and no leaking. I guess I'm lucky.

Good question, I haven't looked under it, but it feels like holes and blisters. The photo makes it look like some sort of joint, but I don;t think it is.

The exhaust was covered in foam, so I guess it's original. I'm surprised it lasted so long.

no they would have been wraped in carpet not foam, someone has added that trying to patch something.

Bruce, I like Joe's posting with the copper. Very sound and no chance taking with radiator hose. The best thing is it looks original and may have been what was in the boat! The only problem will be to match the size. You never mentioned what size of hose was in it! Although rare, 2 1/2" copper fittings are made.

That may be perfect. If I have enough room, maybe that and some ribbed exhaust hose would give me enough of a bend to run a stright section from the transom to the elbo.

I have the larger V8 style motor box, so I may have enough room.

OHHH MYYYY GODDDDD, what is that, or should I say "who would do such a thing"?????? PO....
I can only imagine the weight of all that IRON.
With the current price of scrap iron, a trip to the recycler could give you a good start towards the purchace price of a " correct exhaust system"

Glenn, With replacment manifolds there always seems to be a issue because the outlets on the risers are never in the same spots as the original. I would just get rid of the corregated flex and run hard wall rubber to the exsisting splice under the floor (or all the way back to be safe). You have several inches of room to the inside of the engine box so the bend should be gradual and easy. The more splices with hose clamps you make is just adding to the number of potential leaks.

I also couldn't help noticing that you may need some stringer work soon.
