Cool boat. I've never heard of a modern 4 cyl rig like that. And by PCM. Maybe they were targeting an overseas market where gas used to be so much more expensive?

Interesting boat, Centurion also made model very similiar.
The original ski supreme factory was just a few miles from where I grew up in Maryville TN. IIRC the owners name was Fowler, I think Mr. Fowler is now at Aztec boats. There are several odd ski supremes around here on the water, although I have never seen one of the small ones. I think they were built well, as most of the ones I have seen still look good and seem to perform well. I do know they have wood stringers and floors. |

Maybe thats it- though I suspect that a smaller motor like that would have to work a lot harder to move the hull than a V8 would. My guess is that it was an option for those people on lakes with a horsepower restriction. I wonder what its rated at... 100? 125? 150? If it really pushes the boat to 42, thats pretty good- the 351 would only have been a few mph faster. |

Tim, looks like a 3.0 litre GM
They were rated at 140 hp They were a great motor, lots of low end great fuel mileage. They major drawback was noise, and not the type we like.Intake noise was so loud and at a frequency that made it hard to talk , at any speed. There are days that I wish Knot Correct was powered by a 4 cyl. rather than the 331....Does anyone do a plug and play, slip one out and slip the little one in????? |

I really like that boat. A great beginner for someone. Doc, is it the GM or the 2.6 Mitsu, which I thought PCM used? Either way you're right about the 140hp. And it's fresh water cooled on top of that! I've got the 140 3.0 GM Indmar in our 17 Shamrock and it only runs about 33mph maxed out, so I feel 42 is possibly a bit much. And Doc's also right about the noise and vibration. Mine is louder at the helm than just about any of our CC's. What gives with that? It's beyond me, as I expected a quiet Singer sewing machine and no exh noise to boot. Oh well.

See how fast a 4cyl is when it's loaded down with ballast & beer.

Reid, I'm really curious about a 17 Shamrock. I've seen bigger ones in Maine, and they are sort of a Downeast style boat. What's a 17 look like? What year? What engine & trans? I've never seen a modern 4 cyl inboard before. Does anyone still make them? |

Bruce, Here's Reid in his Shamrock.
Also, they still make the Atomic 4. It would be interesting to find out just how many of those engines were made! Edit, I found a Atomic 4/Universal site to see if I could get some history on the engine but the site has got some problems! |

Cool boat. I never heard of Shamrock until last year. There's a 24+- footer on my lake that is a nice looking boat.
Last year I looked all over for modern 4 cyl inboard engines because there was a beautiful 62 Compact Skier advertised on this site, but it did not have an engine. I could not find one anywhere. Just as well because I like my Mustang better. |

That picture of Reid looks as tho it was taken in the Keys. Didn't know he pulled that boat all the way down there...but of course...with Reid almost anything is possible.

Bruce, Too bad you missed the Compact Skier. I know you are having fun with you Mustang but I know you would like A wood boat too.
The Compact was available with a Universal, Gray Marine and Interceptor 4's and 6's. Even the same 100HP that you have in the Mustang!! The 70 HP Universal was the Atomic 4 that is still around. The 3.0 liter 4 cyl. GM is very popular in small I/O's. I even have one in a 17' Rinker I/O that I still can't sell!! I do know what the Doc and Reid are talking about regarding the howling intake noise. Merc still offers it in a straight inboard too. The Universal Atomic 4 has got to be without a doubt the most popular 4 cyl. ever produced. Simple and reliable. Probably the most popular use today is as a auxiliary in sailboats. |

Pete, I should have posted about it. I did research on my own and they seemed nonexistant. Anyway, hopefully, my current power supply will work. I don't know what I'd do if I have to repower the Mustang. |

Eric, I'll bet the majority were sailboat auxiliaries. Sailer's should not even be around anything mechanical! "Oil? what's that for? Water pump impeller? What does that do?" The only exception is the Doc. I know he does sail! |

Blow boat owners are in a league of thier own, oops Boat Doc has one, they really are strange and you can pick them out of a line-up for sure. they usually drive Volvo's and Slaabs for some strange reason, but once again thier money is green and the conversations usually includes my love for sailing

Pete, this was the boat. The color of the wood and bottom looked so good... I had talked with the seller. He wanted 4K firm. It came with a tranny and a non marinized 4 cyl Ford engine. I figured I'd be into it for 7k by the time I was done, which was too much. If it had been a 17' Tournement Skier, I would have bought it.

Pete I never fail to be amazed at the lengths you go to to share info on this site.
Riley: Gotta agree with your comment on Reid. And if you ever saw where he lives and what his wife Laurie looks like, you'd be even more amazed. The guy has an absolutly perfect life. You'd never know it by the down to earth way he acts tho. john |

Wait a minute now, just because you guys don't know a shroud from a stay or a reach from a run doesn't mean that some of the more well rounded mariners around here can't also figure out how to make an engine run. You guys are only living half the good life. I guarantee any of you spend a windy afternoon with me on my Nacra, or the Doc on his Hobie and it will end one of two ways either you love it or you fear it but you wont be bored. -Joe. Forgot to add I think the 4 cylinder boat is sweet but 42 is a pipe dream I would think you would be doing real well to hit 36 with a skier in tow.... but that would be fast enough. |

Volvos and Saabs. For a stereotype, probably pretty close. In the late 70s and 80s, I think I would throw in Alfa Romeo and those old BMWs (2000s I think). Today, Toyota Prius. BKH |

Riley, we can build a stroker for the old girl. Not too many mods to pull out that 6 banger.
A 347 w/375 hp would be a good choice, nice sound, those Maniacs will love ya for the sound alone......... |

Eric to be exact I own more "blow boats' than power boats, 5 to 4.
As far as skill, how much does it take to fire it back it off a trailer and make a few laps. As with my Hobie odds are you can't even rig it , much less put her on a beam reach in 15 knots and keep the pointed end up.There are parts on her you can't even spell and terms that you can't explain. There were sails before there was steam, but it took a breed all its own to do it.These guys were called SAILORS. And yes we are a different bunch, the rebel coming out I guess.Joe makes a good point,I will scare you or hook you , It all depeds on the size of your gonads......... |

Brian, you can shove that Prius up your Cailornia As***
You are one of those that don't know a shroud from a fore stay, a roller furling from a pintle. After your dig at me for the gook remark, same goes .....This is a site for CC and not polictical or personal statements towards other ethnic groups. No place here to be slammin' someone that has a little more talent or desire to expand their water talent. I repeat how much time or talent does it take to back your new CC in the water????Read the above post Mr. California........ |

Doc,
Perhaps you should reread my post. Eric and Pete offered their observation that sailors frequently drive Volvos and Saabs. I was asked by Pete specifically for my observations on the same with respect to the "left coast." I rendered no opinion about sailing, sailors, and certainly no opinion about you. I slammed no one. Furthermore, if you'll look back at the post regarding racism, you'll find that I made no dig at you or anyone else. Personally, I think racism is pathetic - a tell-tale sign of ignorance - and I find it to be unacceptable. Nevertheless, in America we allow our citizens their opinions, and I would be the first to defend one's right to say and believe as one pleases. I merely stated that this forum is not an appropriate place for racism. Further, Doc, you are pretty quick to make assumptions and slam me. You have no idea what my skills are around sailing. The fact is, I learned to sail when I was 8. I don't profess to be an expert and, in fact, I don't enjoy sailing. I'm sure my time spent as crew on a 60 foot Swan can't compare to your experience as mighty captain of a Hobie Cat. But then again, I don't like sailing. Doc, I've met you and your wife. You were kind enough to pick up breakfast for my wife and me in Greenlake. I enjoyed meeting you and thought you were a pretty good guy. Yet, for the past week or so, it seems quite obvious that you are attempting to draw me into a fight. I have no idea why. If you want to be a jackass, knock yourself out. I promise, you won't be able to bait me into doing the same. BKH |

I drove a 92 Volvo 240 wagon for 8 years. Even used it to pull my 88 2001 the two blocks to the boat launch. Great snow ski ride. Reliable car. I think the Nader for President bumper sticker on the back was an option though.
