Hi:

I want to remove my 1984 BFN off its trailer to make some repairs to the bottom hull gel coat and the trailer. I believe I have seen on this site pictures of home made supports. Does any one know the link or care to share pictures of theirs. I would like the flexibility to be able to get the boat back on the trailer fairly simply in order to keep footing while doing the repairs (if thats possible).

Thanks.

Welcome aboard Mark! The stands I made are on page 2 & 3 of this thread. Also, I think it was Pete who did a great job of explaining the transition using stands and the nose wheel. He'll know better where to find that than I...if he doen't chime in I'll go digging. Try stands or support in the search feature. This site has tons of info archived!

Well, I can't find it!

Mark, Basicly the jack stand nose wheel is lowered raising the aft end of the boat. The aft is blocked at the corners and then the nose wheel is raised. The keel is blocked about 2/3rds of the way forward and then the nose wheel lowered. At this point, the boat should be sitting on the 3 blocks. Now, to get the trailer out! Move the trailer forward until the cross member or axle is at the blocking under the keel. Re block behind the trailer cross member or axle and move the trailer forward again. Repeat until the trailer is free. You can move the blocking so you can work on the area under it. If you have a sturdy garage, the best way is to hang the boat. I can go into that if you are interested.

Greg, It only gets worse with age! The worst thing for us guys is that women never seem to forget things. They will come up with some stupid thing you did 20 years ago. It got you in trouble 20 years ago and then again when they bring it up again!!

Thanks for your help. If I hung the boat in the garage my wife would have me hanging along side the boat. Do you see any problem doing this with the engine (454) still in the boat? I would hate to call my brother and tell him the engine fell through the hull...

Oh so true Pete! They seem to have a gene we didn't get for remembering certain things?!!?

I think it only proves that God has a sense of humor!

84, sorry for the sidetrack. That 454 is heavy...make sure to 'over-engineer'. I used a cherry picker, but I also had to remove the wheels on 1 side and lower the boat. Much fun! LOL

this is wierd but i always gauge things by how many men equal a engine, if the engine is 400 lbs. then thats 2 men which could easily hang from the rafters in a garage, or 600lbs. are three men. we pulled many engines back in the day from the garage rafters, we would throw a 4x4 across and chain hoist them out. I think to hang a boat at home you could use a 4x4 setup (braced) and using the lift rings on the back and the front, gantry stle.

I plan on leaving the engine in the boat. I'll try 8122pbrainard technique. My main concern is not having the engine fall through the bottom of the boat or screw up the hull configuration.

84 no worries about the engine going thru, just be safe on pulling the trailer out, tires on rims also works well for cribbing

It's done all the time. We would have our engine all over the side of the road if it was!! Look at a storage rack at a marina sometime. Two little bunks at the back and the keel supported by the rack cross member.
