Steve, (or anyone) Weren't you the one who dug up the actual Wisconsin regulation on noise after the Barney issue on GL? I'm looking for it and have done a internet as well as a CCfan search and can't find it. Did you find it on a state of Wisconsin or DNR site? I understand I may be listening to a couple more hydros up north this summer. We have had one for several years but the guy has always kept the noise to a min. by not running it much. I do know that our water cops don't have a DB meter so I know there are plenty of people that will get together and donate one!

I don't think I was the one that dug up the ordinance. Maybe Mojo found it when he was addressing the issue for this year's reunion.

Search for 'Barney'. You'll probably find the original threads from last year.

Steve, I did do the search and all I found were posts of other state noise regs. Must have been what I was thinking about!

I found it last year on the Wisc DNR site, don't have a minute right now to search but it should be on that site somewhere.

Alan, I did find it:

"Mufflers: No person may operate a motorboat without a muffler or one which exceeds noise level standards (86 dB on an "A" weighted scale) with a muffler. Operators must submit to testing when requested. Muffler cutout devices are prohibited which allow the noise level to exceed 86 dB."

Joe, your seach skills are certainly better than mine! It was the more detailed regulation that I was looking for. Now I need to look up the 3 different methods of testing procedures.

Thanks guys.

Pete,
Here is a link to CP's page on explaining the basic differences. I think Wisconsins actual test distances may vary a little from those in the text.
My question is , Are our boats grandfathered,as they never came from the factory with any mufflers?

Steve, What are you worried about? Are you working on a Hi-Tec for the 6? Are you thinking about GL problems?

Really, I did run across a small statement below the general rule that stated older boats without modifications to the factory exhaust are ok.

I really do not feel we are going to have any issues this year in GL. Barney was just out playing with his new toy and the wrong person was picked on!! Again, I firmly believe the Db meters are used as a tool to go after the obnoxiously loud. (boats and people)

The obnoxiously loud hydro on our lakes up north is the reason I was looking into it again. BTW, I've also met the owner!!!

Pete,
dang... now you let my secret out!

Im not really worried.. but, we,ve always got mixed signals from the "city hall" up there AND it only takes one guy with "The badge" to shut you down if HE choses to.

also, I would like to see a copy of the "grandfather clause" if you can find it?

Guys,
Although it is up to each individual officers discretion and obvious attitude, I don't think any one will have a problem unless stopped for some other infraction. Pete, I agree. Barney was out testing some new equipment, and Marshall was a victim of late summer/new toy revenue...

Again, if your not screwing around, driving erratically, or to close in a drag race etc, we'll all be fine.. Just make sure your registration, fire equip, throwables etc are up to speed...

Steve, Here's the statement regarding original equipment.

Mufflers and Noise Levels:

An effective muffling system is required for the exhaust of each internal combustion engine and the use of cut-outs is prohibited. Any boat operated on the waters of Wisconsin must be muffled to effectively reduce noise. Specifically, it is illegal to operate a boat that exceeds a noise level of 86 dB (decibels).

"In general, do not modify your factory exhaust if the result makes it louder!

Loud boat noise not only bothers other operators and users of the waterways, it can also disrupt peace ashore because of sound's ability to travel great distances over water. Excessive noise can also prevent a boat operator from hearing other boats' sound signals and warnings and can prevent you from hearing approaching law or rescue personnel."

I found it here:

Wisconsin boating law basics
