Pete.. The motor that the PO put in it was a 318 automotive engine with all of the marine bolt-ons. Yeah I made it look good, thinking i could get it to crank right up (even though it has been 5 years). It will turn over, has spark, and it wont even hit a lick with ether! Not sure whats the problem, but I would rather put a marine engine in... you know, since its original. The PO said that he didnt think a 318 was original, he said it was either a 340 or 360. He couldnt remember. Should I just look for a total different motor with more HP? and What engines will bolt up to the old 270 volvo outdrive? I have not messed with anything on motors, except for boltons.. as I never had the equiptment to pull one. I know I can do it, as anything mechanical is my cup of tea... I have know idea what engines bolt up with what tranmissions/outdrives, and or what needs changing to retro fit, alignment, ect. So.. any help would be appreciated!

Michael, I just sent Craig (64X55) the thread. I'm also hoping that Reid will see this too. Both are experts with the Volvos. I'm not too sur that the 318 wouldn't have been the original.

Michael, Got Pete's message about your engine and Volvo outdrive question. He might be giving me too much credit; I know that the Volvo 250's, 270's and 280's (as well as a few more models) were all used with the little 16' and 18' Donzi's (and others) and were very often coupled to small block Fords and Chevy's (most often Fords on those older Volvos - but a lot of Chevy 350's AND I think ("I think") I had seen some Chryslers too). It's just a matter of finding the bell housings and stuff to make things work but it sounds like you have all that.

Of course now Volvos are all GM's.

A good way to get a good idea and more info. on this would be to jump over to the Donzi Reigstry web site (not the official Donzi site - but the one called "The Donzi Registry").

There's a list a probably 1,000 little 60's and 70's Donzi's with probably 80% Volvo outdrives and they usually list the engines, outdrives, etc. in each boat.

I'll check it out too if I get some time here. This is all just off the top of my head. Some of those bell housings and stuff are pricey, so if you have the correct bell housing, starter, and all that stuff, for a 318 (or 340 or 360), you might consider sticking with that motor.

I'll let you know if I think of (or find out)anything else!

Michael, I found this site last night http://www.powersourcedist.com/1060452.html when researching the 318's.I have one that appears to be original and thought I would check a reman against paying for the machine work, and parts. I don't think that 1400 bucks is bad for a reman.Don't know anything about these folks though. Anyone had any experience with them?

Michael, Do you know if the engine ever ran? The basic automotive block (except for brass freeze plugs) will be the same as the marine. With all the marine items on it it should be good. What about rotatation? Maybe the wrong starter rotation? It's got fuel and spark so the 3rd thing needed is compression. Hows that? Do you have the timing roughly set to the #1 TDC on the compression stroke?

Craig, Thanks for the information. I would love to put a GM motor in it... It would be a lot easier to find parts for! I am going to check out the site in a minute..

Bob, I will also check out that site.. The price isn't bad... but I know there is somewhere out there that has a better price, just have to do some digging...

Pete... Yeah, the engine ran, but he stopped running it when he noticed water in the oil (milky). He drained the oil/water, and replaced it with fresh. Then winterized it. and it set like that for 5 years, before I took it off his hands. I found the problem where the water was coming from, and bought new manifolds, gaskets ect. I still need to put the brass plugs in it, as it still has the auto ones. Standard rotation was not changed, and the starter was the original one that was on the old motor. I will check the compression on all cylinders this weekend, and let you know the results. About the timing question... I have know idea how to set that. no timing light, and even if I did, no idea how to use the dang thing! The motor ran before he stored it. When I took off the intake mani, I marked a line from the base of the distributer, down to the block so that I could line it up back where it was. I replaced the intake after then paint job, then put the distributer back, and lined it up. Prob not the way to do it, but I thought it was a good plan. (what do I know!)

Dont know if it helps but there's a little cruiser here in town with a Chrysler 318 (Fury??) and a Volvo 280 outdrive, so the engine-outdrive should match.

Micheal, Do a search and find one of those "how too" tutorials on using a timing light. It's not at all hard and even the instructions that come with the light will be straight forward. Ether will be a lot easier than trying to explain it here!!

Luch, Unlike Merc or OMC whose outdrives came as a package with the engine, the Volvo could be ordered with any engine. The boat manufacturer could even just get the outdrive and drop in his own engine. Since CC was into the Chryslers back then, I've got a feeling that's what they did!!

What Luchog said there is enough to confirm that the Volvos and the Chryslers were used together, but then I guess we already knew that if that's what the boat in question has in it!

Pete - I had never heard it put quite that way about Volvo being available with any engine, but it could be now that you mention it because I think a lot of the little Donzi's (of the same year) came with Volvo AQ drives (250's, 270's, 275's, 280,s etc.) but sometimes Fords and sometimes Chevy's. Not really positive abou that; just seems like it from looking over the boat's on the Donzi site.
I do know that Mercruiser and OMC AND Volvo had all gone through periods where Ford's were the main engine and then GM was.
OMC's "King Cobra" years (late 80's early 90's?) were still (or again) Ford powered.
And there's at least one nice Donzi 16 I can think of on the site (from the late 60's or early 70's) that has a 302 Ford but unlike most of that era that had Holman Moody Ford Volvo setups, had a Mercruiser outdrive. What were they called; I think T-808's (or something like that -- before Alpha's and Bravo's)?

I think what Pete is saying is more than correct, you can find almost any engine fit into a Volvo Outdrive around here, something you dont see with Mercruiser's.

Many Commander engines coupled with Volvo's here, as well as Ford, Chevys and Chryslers inline 6's, then of course you have some Volvo Engines too.

I was almost going to say -- I don't think there is a Volvo "engine" and then, of course, I remembered the cars. (Duh!)

I never really thought of Volvo "engines" being used with the outdrives. Maybe? Most of them now and for a long time, even if they say "Volvo" are just GM engines (basically Chevy's) with Volvo being the marinizer, like so many others (Indmar, Pleasurecraft, Crusader, etc. (and in the old days Interceptor, Holman Moody, etc.)).

I think I've seen even BMW engines with Volvo outdrives on a few occassions (boats seen on the web in Europe).

What I was trying to say is that you could find almost any marinization with a Volvo Outdrive.
