Stumbled upon these 2 pics today. This is usually the type of person I get stuck behind at the ramp...
I'm hoping this was a joke. If not, I bet he didn't make it very far. Rob |

Hey don't knock it...the neighbor of a friend of mine tried to pull a big a$$ boat home from a boat show w/ his Chevy Astro (van). The boat showed up at the house behind a commercial tow vehicle, the van showed up at the junkyard in two sections (front and rear for you slow ones) and a nice new Dodge Dually showed up in the driveway 2 days later.

The clueless guy (first day out in the new (and first ever, boat)in the truck takes 15 minutes trying to get the trailer straight down the ramp. He doesnt know how far to back the trailer in so he's back and forth about 20 times trying to get that right. The glam, overweight wife with the foofy hair, red fingernails, black lacy cover up and gold high heel sandles is up to her chest in the water trying to get the boat centered on the trailer, the bratty snot nosed kids are standing off to the side playing with themselves....the husband and wife start screaming at each other...the worthless friends sit in the boat just watching, not having a clue as to whats going on...not that I've ever witnessed anything like this before. |

I pull dads 32' wellcraft with my 1ton four door 4x4 and still looks almost that bad size wise, it does handle the 15k pound boat just fine though. That truck looks huge till you hook it to the boat.
I never liked to pull much with my explorer, always felt a little squirley with anything more than a pair of four wheelers on. He probably borrowed that one from a buddy to pull the boat home... |

A friend of mine has an equipment rental shop. I've seen many a Bobcat (8000# worth) being pulled back in with a mini-van or small Jimmy. And I don't think any of them are equipped with brake controllers.

Yeah, that boat is too big for the exploder, but I see a lot of people making the other mistake he has, that is the ball hitch is too low causing too much tongue weight. I used to see a guy pull a nautique to the lake with a blazer with the safety chains dragging on the road. All he had to do is flip the drop hitch and put the weight back on the trailer axle.
The people I get behind on the ramp are the ones that back half way down the ramp, get out and start putting stuff in the boat that's in the truck. They could do that while waiting in the parking lot. And they are the same people that pull half way out and unload the boat and pull the drain plug. |

I enjoy when I stop in the prep-lane and take the time to load the boat, plug and disconnect lights. Someone gets in the boat to start it and back it off the trailer.
Then some guy pulls around me and stops on the ramp to prep the boat. Like he did not see me sitting there. I really enjoy waiting on them..... not |

I just love the $hit eating grin the driver has in the first picture. It is like he knows he is a dumb a$$, but hey, the bitchy wife with the black lacy cover up is waiting!

Patti and I used to live about 10 minutes from the Avon Lake boat ramp Larry. For a fun evening we would take sandwiches and drinks for supper to the benches overlooking the ramp. What a great evening of entertainment! john |

No kidding John, I could sit at the ramp for hours just to watch. Recent events include: a guy launching his boat with out the plug, he didnt pull away, but he let it set at the ramp for some time before realizing what happened. He got it back on the trailer, parked in the middle of the ramp and it drained for literally 30 minutes. It must have been up to the gunnels. Another guy unhooked his boat before backing down. About 10 feet from the water, the boat rolled off the trailer, transom and lower unit dragging on the pavement. He just kept backing, pushing the boat down the ramp. Most recent was the one described above. Huge boat, must have been 25 feet with a 10 foot freeboard. Obviously novices and way too much boat for beginners. Took them forever to get everything lined up and the boat on the trailer. Memorial day is always a good time for ramp watching because everyone, including the new boat owners, head out for the first time. Its only annoying when the knotheads are holding me up, otherwise its quite entertaining. |

I have heard a story of a new boat owner that couldn't get the boat to plane off. Stopping by the marina they had the boat checked out. It ran fine, timing ok, tilted the outdrive, nothing on the prop, Sent a diver to check underneith and he found the trailer still attached to the boat.

Me and a fishing buddy of mine were coming in to the ramp one night and tried to help a guy get his boat off the trailer. Boat and trailer were at the proper depth in the water, but the outboard boat would not budge.
Tie down straps were released, bow strap un-hooked. We could not figure it out. Had the guy pull the boat up out of the water to inspect everything. He then tells us he had just put in new seats...using about 4" nails. You quessed it! Nailed the seats right through the hull into the bunks on the trailer. That was one of the best! Jimsport93 |

One of my favourites is watching two blokes shoving with all their might to get the damn thing off the trailer only to realise the rear tie downs are still attached. Always a laugh.

I worked at a marina by the cottage for two years back in 69 and 70. Like you guys I have alot of "boat ramp stories" that still give me a chuckle today.
The best was the guy with an International stepside right off the farm. They had a big old Chrysler f'glass boat on behind. Pops jumped in the boat and sonny backed in with some speed and hit the brakes with the intent of sliding the boat off the trailer but the whole rear bumper came off and trailer and boat floated back. Turns out they forgot the rear tie downs. This was only the beginning. Pop crawls over the windshield and gets back on the ramp to give sonny hell and look at the truck. While he's doing that the boat is slowly sinking because they also forgot the drain plug. Fortunately they had a chain that they were able to rescue the boat before the engine submerged. Back then it was common to have a hich that clamped on a cars chrome bumper. I remember many of those breaking, pulling off or badly bending the bumper when people tried to pull their boat out of the water. I don't see as much excitement at that ramp today but I'm sure there is! |

I saw something like that going down the road one day, although a little less redneck. It was something like
this. Seems like a decent idea, but I'd hate to have to back it up. It seems like I'd want to pull it with something other than an Astro van though. Rob |

Pete, Im looking at the Blazer and thinking no normal man could even think to do what that guy is doing, he even went out of his way to make the wood contraption and special chains for the side....the only thing that gets me is the plates say Utah, maybe he is heading South, back home
