The PCM tech called me back and said that the rear 2 intake manifold water ports on 302,351 or 350 engines, are blocked for a reason, it is to force more water thru the block to keep the heads cooler. Has anyone had overheating problems with after market intake manifolds? I am hesitant to use one now.

You can buy aftermarket intakes with or without rear water passages. Don't quote me on this but I believe the Performer does NOT have passages, the Summit does. So just do some homework and buy what fits your need.

I've run both with and without rear water passages and have never noticed a difference. You could also just block the passage with the intake gasket.

I have one Holley used to make from about 15 yrs ago. I believe the passages are openbut not 100 % sure. Either way I have had no problems.

If I was not doing my home work I would not run in to these conflecting issues. Not one person said not to use a intake manifold with open rear water passeges , nor did they say block them off. I am the novice asking the questions , expecting answers from experts. Just like the marine Holley , or marine Edlebrock carb with a pcv port at its base neither company makes one. All I wanted to do was get on the water and not have the boat stall or blow up, so I ask a simple question what is the best way to do this. I end up with being told to ,put in a new mallory dist., put a 8 degree wedge, put a new edle or weiland, or summit intake manifold, use a edlebrock marin carb, oh no! only a Holley marine carb will work properly. Edle are cheap use orginal stuff. If somebody out there knows exactly how to make a 1985 SN 2001 Purr like a kitten at idle and run like it should smooth and fast, tell me. I know how to build car engines , I just do not want to take a chance with my family lifes at stake in a boat. Why am I so paranoid, my buddy in florida about 30 years ago had his family on the dock while he went to start his boat , his jaw fell at his wifes feet after it blew up.

Arktran - I see you are in Cleveland, I think that is where Eric (FFI) is. Maybe he can help you, as you sound frustrated. Everyone wants to let posters know what worked for them; I'm sure guilty of that. Probably should focus on what didn't work - that is a longer list!

I am just venting, I am going to clean up the original intake, put a new holley on it, new Mallory dist ,new resistor, new coil, wires and plugs ,check all fuel lines and filters change oil, time it and see what happens. Thanks for your understanding.

Good luck. These boats had good engines when they were new, keeping it stock is a safe bet, right Pete??

There are a lot of us here that need to remove all our aftermarket parts .They will not work as well as the stock setup.
I have a 331 stroker , will anyone swap me even for a "STOCK" 302.Stroker has low hours,250 at least.
It was the fastest boat at "River Run" this year, even beating out the "Orange Crush"
Best to get rid of it now before I have problems, may concider a 6 banger...................boat dr

Well I hope I didn't light your fuse with the "Homework" comment as that's not what I meant to do. I just meant you should keep looking and asking since you don't seem to trust the answers you're getting here. Thought I answered your question as some have cooling some don't, I as well as many others here have used both and I do not ever recall ONE single over heating problem caused by this.

If you talk to PCM about "ANY" mods to these motors they will tell you not to do it. I've talked to their tech people to and that's their answer for everything.

Just my opinion so for what it's worth, changing an intake alone without any other mods will get you nothing worth mentioning in my book, it's wasted money so spray paint your original and put it back on. I'd challenge anyone to change an intake alone and tell me they can notice a difference in performance.

Fix all your original parts except the carb (put on a new one) close the lid and go skiing. The original parts will run your boat if each is working properly.
