Our mapquest travel path is sending us right through Madison WI en route to GL and was just wondering if there is a way to avoid going straight through the city or if it's something to worry about at all?

Some family friends want us to stop and stay the night thursday night in NE Iowa so we don't have to trailer at night.   (Mojo, I told you Alicia would change our plans AGAIN!) This would put us through Madison around 7-8 AM.

Any suggestions?

Have never had much trouble in Madison, WI I-90/94/39 do not go thru town. They are East of downtown. I take US-51/I-39 to SR-23 thru Princeton on to GL.

Dude, does she know what a great lakeside party you are going to miss Thursday night?? Oh wait, she probably doesn't give two hoots hahaha..

OK, take those directions to Green Lake from Madison and flush them..
Yes, take 151 out of Madison North, to the second rte 73 exit via Randolph, not Columbus !!!

Stay on 73 all the way North past 44, past 33 until it basically dead eands into Rte 23. Turn right. The business 23 exit to GL is about 6 miles from 73, right past Lasonia Country Club. Cant miss it !!! Once you see the right hand turn onto business 23 Green Lake, the main part of down town is about a mile down, as is the camp ground...

See ya's Fri !!!!

Yes, this is another, trouble free route. We've found it faster to hed up 151 to 73, so we do it ever weekend... Give it a try, That is unless your heart is set on seeing the waterfall in Montello Ha..

Made me chuckle a bit. I've only been through Madison twice, but it wasn't anything we would think of as traffic. BKH

I know what you mean Brian but if you catch Madison at the wrong time you can be in it for a couple of hours. Half of Illinois leaves town and heads north on friday nights and it can take hours to get past it, same issue heading home on a sunday afternoon. If you have the mis-fortune of getting stuck behind an accident forget it. We've pulled over for 4 hours and had dinner waiting for it to clear. We used to camp about 30 miles west of Green lake every weekend and the trip at the wrong time would take an extra 2 hours each way.

I can say with confidence that now matter the route (East side through Milwaukee or West Side through Madison) you are going to hit major Road construction...

I-90 around Rockford to Beloit is a mess with two lanes and no shoulder.
I-294 from Ohare to Gurnee is a disaster with lane closures, barracades etc..

Each location holds a 45MPH limit, so I suggest trying to get through these areas during mid day if possible. Around rush hour will add 45min to an hour easy to your plans..

Unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do to avoid these areas without getting off the highways and taking much smaller county routes or side streets...

Try to work with it is all you can do.. Now if flying into Milwaukee or Madison (of of course North from there) all the construction is done, so it's clear from there...

Enjoy....

I assume that if your coming from Delhi, you will be taking Hwy 20 into Dubuque, IA (my hometown) and then taking 151 up to Madison. Driven that route about a million times. 151 is good 4 lane Hwy the entire way. Once you get to Madison, you want to take the Beltline, which includes Hwy 12/14/18/151, it will be a RH turn to get on the Beltline ramp. Then you follow the beltline to I-90/39 North (if you go past the Madison H-D store you done gone to far...) Then it will be a short run up I-90 to the 151 exit (maybe 5 or 6 miles), then follow the directions above to WI 73 and then to WI 23. Madison is very easy to get around, even at rush hour their is very little in the way of traffic jams.

On a side note, their are some good boating options out of Dubuque, nothing better then rolling down the river and pulling up to the many sandbars, as Jimmy Buffet would say, "just keep it between the navigational beacons" (bouys in this case) and if you have time the Mississippi River Museum is excellent. Delhi is nice too - fun lake with lots of nooks and crannys to explore.

Geez, I should have you stop and get my folks moving when you come through Dubuque, they are supposed to meet me at Noon in Princeton(just west of Green Lake) on Friday, to clean/pick up the boats and caravan into GL. They know the way around Madison too, you could follow them!

skutsch,
Thanks for the directions! I'm still debating on weather we'll drive the whole way thursday night or stay over in Delhi.

If we do decide to stay, I'd be more than happy to meet up with them sometime in the morning. I was planning on heading out of that area pretty early tho. Let me know, maybe we could work something out! It would be nice to follow someone who knows the way!

Storm;

I'll talk to them this week, but my suspicion is that they will not be ready to go when you roll through, I think they were planning on an 8 or 9AM departure. I have to give my folks a lot of credit, they still run around like much younger folk even though they are in there mid 70's (Dad) and 60's (Mom). I will be with them all week for a wedding in CA, so I'll talk it over with them and let you know. It really is easy though, you shouldn't have any problems, all though it is nice to have someone to drive with in case of breakdown, etc - safety in numbers!

Not quite, brother. 94 South of Milwaukee is being torn up for a multi year revamp. If you are flying into General Mitchell Airport in Milwaukee, do some research to find out what is the best way to pick up 94 West (which is actually heading north between Chicago and Mke.)

Once you are clear of that, follow 94 turning west in downtown Milwaukee. 5-7 miles later you'll hit 41/45 heading north. (An alternate would be to pick up the 894 bypass which heads west and joins 41/45. It is about the same distance and traffic) This is clear sailing until you approach your exit (Johnson Rd HWY 23) in Fond Du Lac. There is construction just south of Fond du Lac, but I have yet to experience any major delays all summer long.

Lastly, DO NOT SPEED IN ANY SMALL TOWNS!!!! ESPECIALLY ROSENDALE!!!

Should be a nice, low traffic ride. I don't travel the roads frequently, so I can't provide insight into construction/detours, etc.

I'd continue by taking 49 to 44 west to County A north to Green Lake. You could avoid Ripon that way.

Absolutely not in this town... They are on the prowl here. This would be located right after you pass the gas station on HWY 23 and HWY 26. It'll slow down to 30 mph.

Rosendale is famous nationwide for their speed traps, I believe for a few blocks they may even slow you down to 25 mph - I always slow it down that much just to be sure... Watch it coming into town and leaving town where they slow you down to 45 mph, they'll get you there too!

Here are a couple of articles documenting the history:

Plans changed again but the good news is we'll be arriving around 7pm instead of 11pm!! Might be able to make the party thursday night!

Steve, let me know when your parents are planning to leave. Maybe we can put together a caravan, we're leaving sunday afternoon.

Chris; I think they will probably be heading out around 9AM on Friday, so probably won't be able to join you heading up that way. They are also out here in CA (family wedding / vacation) and won't arrive back in Dubuque until late Wednesday evening.

We can chat over the course of the weekend about the return trip to IA, they would probably feel better about being in a caravan. They both get a little nervous about trailering the boat and would probably appreciate the company. See you guys in a few days!
