I was riding in the back while my wife was driving. I noticed that when she had the boat in gear but was just idling there was a mild tap-tap-tap sound. It was either coming from the floor behind the engine compartment or inside the back of the engine compartment; probably both. However, when she gave the engine some gas to pull a skier, the knocking either stopped or was drowned out by the engine. We had too many people and too much equipment in the boat for me to do a thorough search on the water.

Is this noise normal? dangerous? simple to fix?

from your description it could be many things, you need to do a little more investigation.

Read about damper plates. Is a common thing specially if your boat alignment is off. Tons of stuff on that and alignment

what's your rpms at iddle speed? sometimes if they're too low bumping them up will solve the clanking sound.

I know it idles at 800 when not in gear. I'm not sure what rpm when in gear. We will probably go Saturday if the weather allows. I will do more investigation, but what exactly should I look for?

you want to see how much they lower when you put the boat in gear, feel if it makes the noise and then give it a little gas until it stops clanking.
