70C vs 71C Transmission |

It seems I read somewhere that 70C and 71C Velvet Drive transmissions are interchangable. Can anyone confirm this?

Good question. I am not sure, but just to tag on some information for other readers. The 70 was designed for the small block engines while the 71 was designed for the big block engines. Happy Boating |

They are to a degree. If I remember correctly the 70c version has a gear reduction unit attached to the back of it or a 71c front half with an additional piece mounted for the reduction assembly. But don't take it as gospel.

The 71C is found on small blocks and the 72C is used for big block applications.

We're getting there. The 70 series was used on the sixes and smallest V-8's, i.e., 260's and early 289's. Externally it looks the same as the 71 including dimension wise. I've got one of each here now. The "72" series is recommended for big blocks and it is physically larger/deeper. We had a '65 Mustang that came with one a 70C. It took a dump, and we found that there was no longer a rebuild kit available for it, so we replaced it with a 71C. There may be some older shops out there with some kits lying around. The '66 CC American Skier we picked up off E-bay last month also has a 70C mated to a 289 Interceptor. Hope this helps.

Thanks all. I printed out the Velvet Drive manual in the Reference Section. The clutches, plates, seals, and gaskets, seem to carry the same part number for a 70C and 71C trans. I am thinking maybe a kit for a 71C will work in a 70C. I have searched for a 70C kit and Reid is right, there are none to be found. The cases and gears carry different part numbers. Anyone disagree?
