What parts do you currently have? Did the boat come with an engine? Is the block junk? Do you have all the marinization parts and accessories? If you do, its a relatively easy job to swap everything over onto a fresh RH 351w long block. What are your plans for the boat? Do you want to throw some extra hp at it? Now would be the time.

The boat came with a engine.... There was 1 frost plug popped out ??

The boat sat for about 5 years, not sure if it was winterized right.
It came from Tennessee, however it does freeze there. A friend of mine said that a frost plug can pop and the engine still be good ??

I think I am going to keep the boat. Trying to figure out the power pack now. After rebuilding the stringers and new carpet and interior, I will have a brand new boat. The Hull is in fantastic condition. Was a 1 owner lake boat. If I can pick up a longblock, I can change over all the other parts.

From what I have found, a long block will run about $1,600.00

Ideally, the plugs give before the block. Being in TN, you may be fine. Is the oil milky? overheating ?

No Oil is not milky, however I have not run it since I bought in early December.

I pulled the engine to do the stringer job.

May be worth it to put the motor back together and try to crank it.
You can do that without putting it back in the boat. You can build an
engine stand from 2x10s and a couple of 2x4s for cross braces.
I have casters on mine so that I can roll it in and out of the garage.
Here is my 318 on my stand

I have mine on a cradle and casters now. Are you
saying just crank it over with the starter, or try to run it?

What should I look for ??

Here is the engine

There are items online that explain this.
I copied this from one of those sites.

"Get your battery, and run the ground (negative) to the block. Since that should be breaker/condenser type distributor, you'll need to wire the distributor to the coil (negative side) and the positive side to the battery. You'll need to hook up your fuel line from a fuel storage tank, to the fuel pump on the engine, and from the fuel pump to the carb.

The Alt is not needed as long as you have the battery connected to the
Coil. It will supply the 12v. If you will be supplying water, you can run it longer. If not, just run it for a short time and remove the belt so you do not burn up the impellor.

You can run a wire from the starter, to a start switch, or you can simply tap the wire on the battery to get it to crank.
Once started remove the 12v from the starter.

Be aware, be very aware, the engine will want to move - I had a running 351 try to tip itself over on us once when we started it on the 4-point floor stand.

Make sure you got all your basics covered - fresh oil/oil filter - plugs, wires (in the right order) etc."

The wiring is different for the HEI distributors but there is another site online that lists those requirements.

After you run it, you can check for water leaks. You can check the oil. And after it is warmed up, you can check compression in the cylinders.

Make sure that motor is bolted down or straped down to the cradle.
