OK Fellas -
Any good tips on cleaning up the swim platform brackets? They are from a 79 Ski Nautique - rigid and I think aluminum...... Want to take the stains and corrosion off. What have you guys done to clean them up? |

The rear scoops are covered with the original vinyl, which is green (no matter what TRBenj says). The bow scoop is painted since the vinyl was ripped and missing.
Have you done the stringers and floor in your boat yet? She looks great! So, any ideas on the bracket clean up? It is for my wall-mounted transom project.......... |

Sorry I can't help ya out on cleaning them up. I'd guess some sort or polish, I will probably do the same to mine once you find out how to clean them.
I haven't done anything in my Ski Tique and hope it won't need em for a few years. My skier didn't have foam so they're pretty solid. Guess I lucked out! What's this wall mount project you've got going on? Something like a bar or just decoration? |

Bead blast them and then have them annodized.

Steve,
If the brackets are stainless then bead blasting will clean them up but you will end up with a mat finish. If they are aluminum then having them re anodized is a good choice however don't blast them. Talk to the guy doing the anodizing first as he will have a means of chemically stripping them. |

If the platform brackets are going indoors, the blasting and annodizing seems pretty extreme(ly expensive). If they are aluminum, you could just sand them and polish by hand, not sure on the SS though.

Kev, The stainless may actually be easier than the aluminum to clean up with just a "Scoth-brite" pad. If they are anodized, it adds a surface hardness that can get up into the C60-70 Rockwell range. A file won't even touch it!! If pitted, then the only choice is to get them to the anodizer. |

This is going indoors. We are building a Correct Craft Room in the new lake house (I've got a GREAT wife, see Diaries page!)........ complete with 79 Ski Nautique Transom mounted on the wall..... The swim platform on the transom will serve as a table that will have Nautique Counter-height Chairs placed alongside. I will use the brackets I have because I don't need the ability to remove the platform (though I really like the CCFan Store ones for my Tique). Plus, I don't really want to go into how much I've spent on this already... I just want to clean them up..... the harshest environmental factor would be the occasional spilled beer.

If they are aluminum, you can use easy off oven cleaner to remove the anodized coating. Then you can just polish them up.
