Winterized today.. when I dropped the bottom cooling line on the tranny a few drips of transmission fluid came out. Pulled the dipstick, no sign of water in the tranny. Normal?

Tom,
As mentioned, it sounds like there is a leak between the oil and water circuit in the cooler. Better check it now before you do get water in the trans. In fact, it wouldn't hurt to do a trans oil change. Water may be in there but it just hasn't circulated enough for you to see it. Take the cooler off. Connect regulated air to one of the oil ports. Plug the other. Set the air to about 30 PSI and then stick the cooler in a bucket of water. Move the cooler around under the water to get any trapped air out of it and then see if you get bubbles. |

I am replacing my cooler at the moment, while I have everyting apart. Had a small leak at one of the fittings. Nice light pink stain in the carpet just below....

I'm a doofus. I've always thought water circulated inside the tranny. (which would be very risky now that I think about it) So the responses didn't make sense to me. Was thinking about replacing some sort of internal cooler and I had never noticed any module that would come out of the tranny. I just looked up coolers on skidim and now realize the fluid gets pumped out and through that external cooler. Duh. So the line that I disconnected was the lower fluid line. Now why didn't more fluid come out?! Vacuum? I did check the fluid level and it was on the money.

Tom, no oil is on the lines as it is pumped through the system by the tranny oil pump when the engine is on.
When you shut it off oil will get back to the tranny case. I know that on the Borgwarners at least, you should measure oil level just after a ride or with the engine iddling at the dock so you get a real case level while some oil is circulating. |

Tom, Don't worry about it!!!. We all don't know everything and learn through life. This site is a valuable tool for anyone. I remember the two guys that wanted to change the spark plugs on their newly purchased older Nautique. First, someone had told them it was a 350 so they went and bought plugs for the Chev. However, they only bought 4 because they only looked at one side of the engine!! They learned too!! BTW, some V drive trans's do have water running though them! |

I'd also have to say the chances are good that they went into a Aotozone. The clerk there wouldn't have known they needed 8 plugs ether!!! |
