Hi,
I'm new to the Correct Craft family, having just purchased a 1970 (according to title) Ski Natique. I have a manuel stating that I have a 318 Chrysler in it, year 1968. The previous owner stated that it needed a tune up. I have a couple of questions. One, I would like to put an electronic ignition system in--any problems with doing that? Where to find? Any help for how to redo the packing on the prop shaft where it goes through the hull? Lastly, how best to change the oil--not much room to work with. Thanks for any help, I love the looks and feel of the boat, I can't wait to get it in the water. |

Welcome, I hope you enjoy your boat as much as we do ours. You should be able to get electronic ignition conversion from SkiDIM(linked from this site, even get a discount). for the oil change, I have a hose connected to the drain plug that I drop thru the bilge drain hole. It makes for easy oil change with the boat on the trailer. I haven't messed with the shaft packing, so maybe someone else can help out.

My boats have been newer so I can't help
with the mechanics, but I'm looking forward to seeing photos of your ride. I've seen some of the gurus on this site recommend vintageperformance.com as a source for parts on these older engines. Enjoy it. BKH |

to change the oil you will have to pump it out there are small electric pumps for around 30.00 or there are differnt vacum pumps available. any marine supply catalog or store would have these. If you ever pull the motor you could convert to the hose through the drain hole type. While your changing the oil it would be a good idea to change the transmission fluid as well. Good luck

Your prop shaft packing should leak on these boats. If I remember correctly the drip rate should be 2 drips every 10 seconds. If your drip rate is excessive, you can gain access to the drive shaft area, loosen the jam nut, and turn (tighten) the packing nut. Then resecure with the jam nut. Only hand tighten, don't put a wrench on that packing nut or you will get it too tight and your driveshaft will get smoking hot when you drive. Check the reference section, your manual should be there with specifics.

Pump the oil out. Then, before refiling, install the drain hose kit in the place of the oil pan drain bolt. You do not need to pull the motor to do so.
Shaft packing: Cut safety wire (if present, but probably not), loosen jamb nut, remove packing cap. Using same size packing, cut three pieces that precisely fit the circumferance (sp) of the shaft. Wrap the packing around the shaft with joints staggered. Reinstall the packing cap and hand tighten. Then tighten some more with wrench...say half turn or a bit more. Tighten up the jamb nut. Do not safety wire until you water test. If too much water enters boat, tighten the cap a bit more. If no water, loosen. Your goal is a few drops/minute. Once you have it right, safety wire. |

Before you replace, try tightening. The shaft packing seems to last forever unless you did something to upset it!

I agree with pumping the oil out. I know on my 302 in my '77 the dipstick tube went to the bottom of the pan.
Go to autoparts store and buy a had pump kit $15 dollars. Worth it's weight in gold, and worked like a charm. You just slip it over the tube and start pumping into your choice of catch cans. I thought about then putting one of those drain lines on the oil pan then, but didn't want to introduce any souce for any leaks. |

I want to thank everyone for their help. I'm planning on getting the pump. I've got an electronic ignition conversion kit ordered. I'm also going to empty the gas tank. The advice on the packing is very helpful.
Once I get all this done it's to the lake and we will see how the old '68 318 runs. We'll take some pictures of the maiden voyage and post them. Thanks Reid for your help. Chuck |
