My wife and I love to ski but we've decided we'd like to try wakeboarding. We went to Academy today and realized we knew nothing about buying a wakeboard. Can anybody recommend a type, style or brand wakeboard for a 200 pound beginner? Or does anybody have a used beginner board they want to sell?
Also, how hard is it for someone who skies to learn to wakeboard? Just the basics, not tricks and flips--I'm past the point in my life where I like my feet to be higher than my a**.   Thanks

Jimbo,

At 200 Lbs, you'll want a board at least
140 cm. Problem is that it will be big
for your wife. She'll be able to get up
easy enough, but that's a lot of board
for most women.

In general, a board up to about 132 or 134 cm
will handle a rider up to 145-150 Lbs. Up to
138 or 140 for riders up to about 190 lbs.

My favorite beginner board is the Blindside
Five-0. They've been making it forever. Easy
to ride, and very forgiving. However, it
only comes in 125, 132, and 138. Won't be
big enough for you. Check the internet,
Munson Ski had them for $99.

Hyperlite Motive and Nirvana are supposed to
be good beginner boards as well. Every brand had a good beginner or intermediate board. I'd go for price. If you end up liking it, you'll get a better board, and have the beginner board available for friends and guests. Definitely
check the internet. You can often find boards
that are last season's, very cheap. Evogear.com, and grizzly sport were two I saw
with boards for 99-125$.

A skier will have no problem getting up on
a wakeboard if you let the boat do the work.
Knees Bent. Arms Straight. Hold your hands
above the board. Let the boat do the work.
Pull on the rope and try to force it, and you'll go down. No different than skiing.

There was a long thread on planetnautique.com
called Beginner wakeboard where lot's of folks
made recommendations as to good beginner boards.

Good luck. Have fun.

im a bigger guy and when i started my first board was a hyperlite fluid 137. im about 210lb that board is probley the best all around board for your buck and it wont be to crazy big for your wife.. i have seen a few on ebay go for like $50 for the board and you can get some decent bindings for $120 for last years high back by hyperlite.. that would be a nice starter board.. jst my 2 cents hope it helps..

Liquid force Substance 140+

This board is something a beginner can ride, but some of the best pro riders can also rip with this board. Get one used... They havn't changed the design for 3 years now.

I wouldn't worry about getting a board for your chick until you get her board shorts to decrease ouchy sessions.

Best beginner tips are "just stay in the seated position in order to get up.... you can stay in this position all the way across the lake" and "stay relaxed"

Excellent beginner board : Motive 144 or 140 if you use it on salt water. Your wife can use it to begin but with her own bindings.

No problem for skiers to learn wakeboarding, like bkhallpass say : let the boat do the work.
Good ride...
