for the past two summers i have replaced my fuel filters that i have bought from skidim item #0502. Fram long filter. both summers they have ended up like this one. The rubber yellow seal casket whatever has disintegrated and has cause me nothing but trouble, time and money. you can see in these pics that this yellow seal breaks off which then clogs my fuel pump and carburetor. Now as much fun as it sounds to rebuild both of these i assure you i have plenty of time and money invested in that act and i am tired of it. Please feel free to give me advice on the problem at hand but until i have figured this out i can't buy another fuel filter from SkiDim. ps i run 91 octane through the boat.

Tommy,
If you can't cross the Fram over to another brand, I'd convert the whole water separator filter assembly to a spin on. Get rid of the Fram!! I sure hope you don't use their oil filters!! |

That may be the ethanol working on the filter

I agree with Brady, you are seeing the affects of ethanol. Either replace the system or swap fuels. Before buying a new filter be sure and check replacement cartridge cost. Some can be pretty pricey. I have the PCM canister type on the 95, it has a water seperator on the bottom. It cost around $42 for the replacement cartridge. Pretty pricey. I only run conventional fuel, so I replace it every two years. Maybe someone else has a more economical filter.
On the 82 I run the short fram, no problems, but I dont use Ethanol. |

[s]Looks just like the standard Chevrolet 6.2L Diesel Fliter / water seperator. Very popular filter part # and a fairly easy housing to find new or used. |

Looks like that is the way to go. The whole assembly is less than the cost of my filter, and the replacement filter is only 8.95. I may swap mine to that one, just to save some money.

Does seem like many here are having issues with ethanol. Ours just switched over in austin last october. If that's what it does to things you can see, just imagine what it does to the stuff you can't. I may start searching for ethanol free. Anyone have any good suggestions?

Not sure what's available in your area but I've switched to running Shell V-Power. The big advantage, at least in my area, is that there is no added alcohol. I've gone to running that in the inboard as well as all my 2 stroke engines. It has solved problems I had been having the alcohol blended gasoline. As a side benefit, it is a higher octane and that takes away some worry about my slightly higher compression and advanced timing on the 351.

I didn't know anyone was selling conventional gas anymore. Every pump i see here in Florida says 1 to 10 percent ethanol. The stuff is bad for engines . Also home depot told me after my new yard blower crapped out that they were having all kind of problems with using this stuff on yard equipment. Anyone know were you can still get ethanol free gas? This stuff blows.

Ethanol has to be added at the distribution center, b/c it is so unstable and will wreak havoc on the pipelines. You may want to contact a fuel/oil distributor in your area and see if they have any stores that they deliver conventional fuel to. I put a fuel tank at my house and have fuel delivered. My buddy did the same thing, and the company brought him a tank with a pump and all! It is a little more expensive, but it is convenient, and has saved all my gas powered yard equipment.

Check any small airports near your home. A lot of them sell 93 Ethanol-free (for guys who burn auto gas in their planes) and they may not advertise the fact. |

Hey Tommy: Possible dumb question. A buddy has that same old Fram in his Sport and we can't figure out how to get the filter out. Does that black portion spin off, drop it down, and lift out the filter? We can't get it to budge. Thanks Doug |

Mine was tough to remove also. I disconnected the lines, removed completely from the boat then lightly clamped the head and used a filter wrench on the canister. But you are correct, spins off then the filter is removed from the inside. |
