I need the helm for my 97 SN. I replaced the cable but there is a lot of backlash and it is the pinion gear in the helm.
Anyone have a good source? |

Eric,
Take a close look at the rack. There should be a means of shimming the backlash out. Why do you think the pinions bad? |

My dad had this boat before me and he is not real good at maintenance. The steering cable needed to be replaced about five years ago so because of the extra pressure (from a tight steering cable) there is excessive wear on the rack and pinion. This is noticeable because of the severe amount of backlash.
And unfortunately shimming is not possible on this rack/pinion, unless the gear mesh is too tight. |
