Welcome aboard Arnie!
The simple answer is that it shouldn't take 2 hands sitting dry in the driveway. The more complicated answer considers the driveline from the trans back; condition of the transmission, straightness of the driveshaft, condition of the strut and the cutlass bearing in it, and last but not least is alignment. Alignment is probably the most common culprit. Try spraying the cutlass bearing with a mild soap and water mix and see what it takes to turn it. Better? Misalignment can also be seen at the strut sometimes. Is the driveshaft concentric in the strut? |

Arnie,
I second Greg's welcome to CCfan. How about some pictures of the boat? Since you feel the prop shaft is hard to turn, I have to ask you about the stringers condition. Have you checked them in any way? If they have never been replaced, I'd be very surprised if you didn't have rot in a 79. The stringer condition will have a major effect on alignment. |

there really is no straight answer to the question, but in the past with a properly aligned engine with a 1:1 ratio transmission and a little lube on the strut one index finger should turn the prop easily....thats after you went thru all the alignment procedures and visually inspectd all parts and after the final alignment

Pete, you sound like me...should I be worried?
Amy wants new carpet in our master, but I had to do a stringer job on it first?!!? Arnie, Eric gave you the straight answer. Mine will also turn with an index finger. You'll know when you get it right. |
