Hello,
I am a new Ski Nautique owner (bought a used '90 from a friend) and new to this board. The guy I bought it from -- who was pretty obsessive about the boat -- mentioned that it would probably be a good idea to replace the impeller this year, and I am trying to decide if that is something I want to take on myself. I am relatively handy, and worked on car motors as a teen until they got way to complex for my basic skills. I've done the oil change and bilge pump, and am trying to decide if I want to try this. So my question to you is, how difficult is replacing the impeller, and while attempting to do it, what could I potentially screw up? I've been looking for a manual or some description on it, with no luck. Any suggestions? Or just let the local marina do it? Thanks for your help! |

It is very easy to do. Use the search function on this site to find how to threads. Get OEM Parts from My Correct Craft.com or Discount Inboard Marine. Do not use a Sierra Impellar. Also it is important to mark the Raw Water Pump with a Sharpie. Mark the Top and Bottom also left and right before removal for the engine. Rmove the hoses and take the pump a part. It has two halfs. Remove and replace the rubber paddle wheel impellar. Some models need a gasket, but mine only uses a O-Ring between the two pump housings. There are Engine Manuals in the Reference Section of this site. I take my Raw Water Pump apart for storage and inspection each Fall when I winterize. In the spring, I install the impellar in the pump and put the pump back on the motor. It is located at one of the two belts. It is a very easy job to do. Just mark the pump so that you do not put it in backwards. I hope this helps, Donald |

Very easy to do. With your experience you should have no problem. I have done mine a few times and dont have as much car motor experience as you do. I also keep an extra one in the tool box because it really sucks to go out the first time of the summer and the impeller needs replacing because it has dry rotted. Good Luck. |

Never seen a dry rotted impeller even some very old ones. They are only a problem if run dry.
You can actually change the impeller without removing the RAW pump (81nautique Alan put me onto this). On my 89 just loosen the adjuster and remove belt undo the 2 small mounting bolts. Then you can remove the cover plate bolts and the impeller comes out quite easily. A nice simple way to inspect impeller condition without removing any hoses or any chance of getting the direction wrong. |

Doug, I concure with Mark's statement. Hopefully you aren't running the engine dry. Even the "let's see if it will start at the ramp before we drop it in the lake" is harmful. You also must not have seen my thread on 25 year old impellers!!! |
