FYI you have a Mustang (actually, a Mustang 17). A Skier is an entirely different model.

Youve come to the right place for info. What are the plans for the rebuild?

Wow, give us a little background on how that boat came to you and what it went through in its life to get in it's current condiction. I can't help near as much as the other guys can but I can tell you one thing to do based on your pictures and my bad luck with my throttle and transmission cables.............pick them up off the floor and do not touch them again until you are ready to mount them back on the engine(see my thread on this issue)

Check out my rebuild project from this spring on my "75 Skier Stringer Replacement". Good luck.

Just one question:
In all of these rebuild jobs there is beer in the pics. So, which causes the other? Does the beer cause you to have thoughts of a complete rebuild or does the rebuild cause you to drink?

Good luck with it & have fun!

Not competelty sure on plans, basic rebuild being that it is my first project like this. Would like to change a few things and I am open to any suggestions for improvements that ya'll have.
I bought the boat last year from a guy in Houston, it had been sitting in a barn for the last 10 years. The motor started and ran after little work but had an oil leak and was just in bad shape. Original plan was just to fix the motor and run it, but reading the forums and looking at everyone's pics has got to me. Oh, yeah the beer. My wife asked me the same question!

Looks like about $3000+ excluding any engine work, gelcoat repair or upholstery and a bunch of time. I don't drink so I don't know how much beer expenses you will have . It will be worth it in the end. I can't hardly go to the water without somebody inquiring about my boat.

Just hope I can pull it off, been reading and man of man. I am not in a hurry, thank goodness! Going to start cutting the floor out tommorow. What is the eaisest and best to do so? Grinder, sawzall? Also does anyone sell prebuilt stringers? If it does come to that, which I am sure it is.

Earl,
Keep reading the threads on stringer jobs. I can't say it enough on how much valuable info is in them.

No, I'm sorry to say premade stringers are not available. You have a choice with going back with wood or going with a composite.

It is a major job but if you have the time and take the time to read up on how to do it right you can do it. It is a labor of love though. Interesting ski pole on the stern.

Yeah I wasn't real sure about the ski pole, but now it doesn't matter cause i cut it to get it out. Man, you ever feel like some people go out of the way to do things half ass so when you go behind them it whipps your butt? What are the options on composite stringers? Aslo, someone give me the lowdown on the foam/no foam debate.

Earl,
There are several composite treads. The best documented ones are Tim's (TRBenj) and Joe's (JoeinNY). Both used "coosa" board which is a polyurethane foam sandwitched between glass. It's expensive and takes more time - laminating it up for the proper thickness and length.

There's nothing wrong with a wood striger job the way most here do it. Plenty of CPES (clear penetrating epoxy sealer) and the use of epoxy rather than polyester resin. Epoxy isn't hydroscopic like poly is. The end result with the extra care in doing the job results in a wood stringer that will last your lifetime.

With wood, Douglas Fir is best. However, in some regions of the country it can be hard to find. We do have one member who's using LVL (microlam) as a alternate - very interesting on how it's turning out.

I happen to be a no foam guy. In your hull, it does not add any structure to the boat. Maybe some sound quality but it won't be much. The cost of the foam is also way up there. I think it may be 1/3rd or better in the overall material cost.

That rear ski pylon is where the lifting ring should be. Maybe the PO was tuber and felt the location back there was better!

Got the gas tank and throttle cables out, man I wonder if people understand when they do some thing half ass how bad it effects people when they go behind them. The tank wasn't mounted in the rear it was wedged in with that spray foam Cut it out and got the tank out. Exaust lines were a pain, there was water trapped in the hull there that had been there for no telling how long. Started cutting the rear floor out, tried using sawzall ended up using a 31/2 grinder lot of mess but a lot easier. Looked like an umpaloompa with my Tyvek suit and respirator on. Sub stringers were rotted completely, falling apart rotted. Took some pics, I'll get them up later. As far as stringers go does anyone have a template to work from,or am i going to have to base everything on measurements from the old?

Put a diamond wheel in your grinder and cut along the base of your stringers on both sides. Err to the stringer side so you don't dig into the hull. With a little luck, you can pop those out to use as a template. A few have mapped the hulls on CAD, but I'm not sure about this model.

Take lots of measurements and pictures before you go too far; they can be a big help.

Earl,
Some have posted stringer dimentions but not for your hull. Take plenty of pictures and measurements. Hopefull the mains will come out in fairly decent shape to use as a template.

BTW, a diamond cutting blade on your little right angle grinder works great. I know Harbor has them pretty cheap. (they're industrial dimonds so you're not buying jewelry! )

The glass only makes the beer crunchy...

Make sure to mark or make jigs, drawings, or however you want to do it, so you can reproduce critical points like the floor level, engine mounting points and so forth. Sometimes more than one path back to home can be a plus.

BTW, this is working out great for me. Wife gave me the approval to buy us a new (2003-2007) wakeboard boat last night. This boat is going to be for my son, he's 13 and is doing a lot of the labor on the project. This way when he's 16 he ain't taking Daddy's boat to the river he's taking his and he knows if he tears it up he's outta luck!

Be careful what you say Earl cause once you get her all done, drive her around for a while, you may not want to part with her.

I hate foam, FYI. A whole day of grinding out foam. Pics to come.
