    Posted: August-03-2010 at 4:48pm
Hi,

I recently bought a very clean 1990 SN2001, however, one speedo wasn't working, the guy gave me a spare one with a broken case to make up one good from the two bad. Before working on the gauge I decided to check the pitot tubes and pickups only to find one of the tubes (right gauge) blocked, I could not blow down it like the other, even with a compressor.

So I tried to take the blocked tube out of the PVC pipe which runs the length of the boat, however, it is stuck in there solid. I have tried tugging real hard on it from both ends and although the tubes stretches like the d*ckens, but it won't budge.

Anyone have any ideas on what might be holding it in tight? I cannot see any screws etc. that have been added and may have passed through the PVC tube into the pitot tube.

I have bought new pitot tubing to put in, but would prefer to get the old out and run the new down the PVC tube to keep it neat and out of the way.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice,

Tony

Welcome
Hope you didnĀ“t blow compressed air through the tubing with it attached to the speedo..might harm the inner diafragm...
Check the pulsation dampeners that are located behind the gas tank...that pitot are conected to them..and from there the pvc runs through the gunnels to the dash....
As for boat desigantion..unless you have a late production 1989 2001..in 1990 the nowake zone hull made its debut and its totally defferent from its predecesor the 2001 hull (sorry my spelling..)
Correct designation 1990 SN...CB (closed bow) or OB (open bow)

Hi Kapla,

Thanks for your reply. I went through each piece individually and started off blowing down the pipe from the speedo disconnected end (with my mouth). I didn't use the compressed air until I had the blocked tube off the speedo and dampener, so just purely the tube that runs through the PVC tube in the gunnel.

I just can't get the sucker out, despite how hard I tug on the pitot tube/tubes. I will replace both if I can get them out, just don;t want to harm the wiring that also runs down the same tube.

Thanks for the clarification on the model, mine is a CB.

Regards,

Tony

Tony
At some point the tubing might be zip tied to the wiring thus making it hard to remove...probably you will need to run new tubing and leave the old there...

That's what I am afraid off, but it doesn't appear to be pulling on the wiring at all when I yank on the pitot tube. I will look again and see if I can move everything as an assembly through the PVC tube.

Thanks again,

Tony

I'd suggest getting a boat length piece of braided wire smaller than the ID of the hose and thread it from the gauge end to the back of the boat. You will at least be able to determine where the blockage is. Sounds like you have something lodged in the tube and my bet is that it is not too far in from the pick-up. Scenario: the boat sits in shallow water, the water is full of sand and stuff, the up and down motion of the stern pumps the foreign material in and you have the blockage. Also, rehearse how any other unrelated maintenance activity might have pinched the tube. The tubing is not expensive to replace but it is one stinker of a job given how the tube gets from the instrument to the pick-up.
