i have an 82 2001..this might be a stupid question but im new to boats. my trans broke and im taking it out and sending it to eric. but my question is, which part of the trans do i remove from the engine? do i take it off from the bell housing or do i take if off somewhat near where the trans mounts are? im really confused because i tried it today and its giving me one hell of a time with the headers i have. he said it should fit perfectly inside a milk crate so i assume it would be only the back half of the trans but once agin im a newb and dont know. if anyone could link me to a write up on this that would be great. anything will help.. thanks

John,
I've always found it easier to pull the trans along with the bell housing then get it out and separate the two on the bench. Plus, you need to pull the bell housing anyway to install a new dampner plate.

first separate trans coupler from the shaft cuopler..then put a bottle jack under each manifold..(stand the jacks on wood blocks to spread the load in the floor) unbolt tranny mounts..rise the engine with the jacks..and then remove the tranny....

I'm going to have to remove my exhaust because it curves back over the trans. Just to make things easier. Do you have to Jack up the engine to get it off?

Yes..rear engine is supported by the mounts on the tranny...so i you remove the tranny you will need to hold the engine in some sort of way...
I´m not sure this is the right procedure here..
first do the shaft thing..then unbolt tranny mounts..jack the engine as I told you...then put some wood blocks between the bilge and the oil pan (this is the part i´m not sure is ok)so the engine stays at the desired height then remove all the stuff you need to clear the tranny..etc etc...
Or if you have a crane use it to support the engine while the tranny iis out..

also you can use something like a 4x4 wood from gunnel to gunnel and strap a chain around it hooked to the engine....

Just to possibly clear up the proceedure, only the aft end of the engine is lifted. Loosen the front pinch bolts on the mounts. The engine will then tilt.

Couple 2x4s across the gunnel on towels. Ratchet straps to support the tranny while loosening bolts. Some creativity can make it much easier instead of man handling.
