Like I said, the S&S's were good looking boats- but vintage CC's are way cooler. Theres nothing wrong with owning more than one!

Since theyre direct competitors and the first MC was a modified Ski Nautique, the thought of owning both just seems sort of incestual to me.

+1 My first inboard was a 78 S&S NO Comparison. I would take the same vintage CC anyday, even back then the deciding factor was $$$. 1978 S&S on a MC shrouded trailer (promo boat w 31 hrs) bought August 1978 with a new cover $6860.00. The Nautique (promo) with trailer was $8,100. I only had $7,000 limit.

Here's my 82 Power slot heading out for a morning of footin about 25 years ago. The curved windshield was awesome and this was the last year before they went to that rediculous looking dash pod.

That's an 81 supreme in the foreground and we had an 82 2001 at the dock as well. I also had a 71 mastercraft hull #15, that was not a very well built boat, had a balsa core hull that delaminated badly when it got wet. By about 1980 they got their act together and the boats were top notch.

I enjoyed that boat Bruce, it was a promo with a textured deck, I have never seen another like it. I bought it in 83 with 186 hours on it for $9100 and 700 hours later I sold it for $10,000. We had 3 inboards at the dock and they all got over 100 hours a season on them, those were the days. I pulled a guy skiing one sunday afternoon and he was so thrilled he asked what it would take to buy the boat, I threw a quick "10 grand takes it away" and he showed up at my door the next day with cash. I was unloading the boat while my WIFE was counting the money!!! Never saw the cash or the boat again, haha

Alan,
What color was the boat above? Hard to tell from the pics. Good looking boat nonetheless. Back in my day, we had an 84 MC Stars and Stripes and an 82 or 86 Nautique at our disposal as well as a bunch of I/Os and OBs. We were pretty well rounded and did pretty much everything on the water. We used the MC as the slalom tractor and we pretty much used the CC for all else.

One thing I liked about that MC we used was how you could sit in the driver seat and reach the water to retrieve a line, dropped ski or anything else. It really had low sides and felt like you were sitting right on top of the water. The ride in the MC was horrendous though and the backseat was a wet ride in all but the most glassy conditions. Didn't care much at the time about that b/c we always used it with the seat out, but it was another reason to use the CC if we were actually needed to sit in the back. The platform on it seemed noticeably smaller than on the CC too and it worked itself loose by about 87 which left many of us feeling that the MC didn't have the same craftsmanship as the CC.

Regardless of the drawbacks of the MC, I always liked the way looked. Even now I still like the way they look and if storage space, money and the opportunity came along, I'd buy one as a second boat. Again not as a replacement for my CC. I still think that a mid 80s S&S has a slalom wake that all but the top skiers in the world can appreciate.

Steve, it was a metalic brown or Bronze color. The thing about that boat is for the times it had the most room of any of the inboards being much wider than the 2001 or the Supreme. We repropped it with a 14x16, that coupled with the reduction tranny there was no stopping it even with the stock 240 hp it would pull a house down. Low freeboard made hopping in and out from the boom a snap. This was always our to go barefoot boat, it spent very little time below 40mph, top speed wasn't much beyond that but we didn't care.

The MC also turned very flat especially compared to the 2001, it was truly on rails. I was more comfortable in that boat than anything else BUT I got an opportunity to drive an 84S&S a few years ago and hated it. Felt real strange sitting that low after being in a Correct Craft for a few years.

Just a quick note on the O/B discussion. My brother-in-law has a Calabria O/B with a Merc 225 2-stroke with a Hi-5 prop on it, and I have never seen a hole shot pull like that boat. I am sure that the twins and triples are more, but this thing is crazy fast. A ton of fun.

Interesting that you experience a rush with a high five on the hole shot. Normally the 5's are pretty pitched and offer more on the top end...or at least that's what I thought anyways.

Show teams usually run big "elephant ear" 3-blade props. This goes for any team I have been on at least. They offer nothing on the top end but usually have a 15" pitch and huge blades.

Actually, this one is setup for pure holeshot as it's primary use is barefooting. top end with this prop is about 60. he says he had a 3-blade stainless on it and was easily capable of 70. I wouldn't want to take it that fast, I have had it in the upper 50's and it is a bear to hang on to, even with double cylinder hydraulic steering assist.

My brother loves the flightcrafts. I think they're cool too. It's funny that they totally got away from that design. Well, I guess Hydrodyne still makes a boat usable in that way.

Our Local Malibu Dealer, East Coast Flightcraft, has two flightcrafts now, which is funny since they're kinda rare boats. Down at the bottom of this page:

Back when the Nuts had (3) 225 Mercs on the Triple Rig the outboard motors where counter-rotating (3 or 4 blade, can't remember) and the center motor ran a 5-blade prop.

I know outboards have been the preferred/state of the art barefoot boats and can appreciate that, but still not a big fan of outboards. I am however a big fan of sleek boats and always liked the original Flightcraft inboards. Looked for one when shopping for my first inboard, but couldnt find one. Pretty limited space, though.

That is one of the best looking boats I have ever laid eyes on!!

What year is that? Late 90's??

I really like the look of the new Checkmate 18 ft with outboard.

Checkmates are definitely cool. Not necessarily the best family boats as they have a huge closed bow, but I guess some of the bowriders are better. My brother had a really nice Enchanter sterndrive. He built the engine piece by piece. He was pushing 500 plus hp by the end. I think this video was before he had even reached peak:

Is this boat from the Lakeland Waterski Club?   Who is the owner? I only know of 1 Hydrodyne in Lakeland.
