I have a friend with a RAM with mulit-displacement. He said he likes the mileage, but you have to drive 55-65 max on level ground, any rise, or over 65, and it won't stay on.

I almost wonder if instead of 8 to 4 cylinder it would have been more effective on a 6,000 lb. truck to go 8 to 6 cylinder, then it might have more of a chance of staying engaged in varying conditions.

I'll have to pay attention and see if I notice it. So far I haven't really noticed it. We went to look at Christmas lights the other night and did a little highway driving with the cruise control set at 65 and it kicked in quite a bit. I took the boys out shopping for mama last night and kinda drove light footed around town and saw it kick on here and there. To me, any time it kicks in it is saving me a little in gas over what I've been used to, so that is enough of a benefit in my mind. Coming from the thirsty 5.4 in the Ford into something that will occassionaly help with gas is a positive move IMO.

I would agree that maybe it would make more sense to drop to 6 cylinders. I'm not sure how feasible that is. I'm really interested to hear how the new Ford Eco-Boost engine does. Similar concept, but applied in a different way. It is great to see all these trucks look for ways to be a good truck for the utility you need, but also take steps to be more efficient for cruising around.

V6 motors have very specific crank journaling that allows what is a naturally unbalanced motor to run (somewhat) smoothly. I bet running 3 per side on a V8 crank would be impossible. That plus the degrees of rotation per stroke would be different.

Well, see the ecoboost is a 6 cylinder with a turbo on each bank. Each turbo is making free HP.

I was very impressed with the ecoboost in the Lincoln MKT when I was looking at a new Flex with the ecoboost. That twin turbo has 90 more hp than the non turbo v6 of the same displacement, and gets the same mpg as the normally aspirated motor.
