Hi,
My boat is running great but my tach seems to be registering lower than what it should be. Are there any pins or switches on the back that I could adjust? When I shut off the engine it doesn't return to zero but after reading a number of posts on this website that issue seems common. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. |

I assume you've tried cleaning up the connections. That's probably going to do it rather than making adjustments. At least that's the first try.

You may want to check the RPM's with a shop tach. "Seems" isn't very accurate!

Dude and Brainard, you talk'n about pulling the dash and checking those connections, or at the motor if there is one, or both? I am not to familiar with the mechanics, Just curious. I have never pulled the dash, but will be soon to install a new depth finder. My tach is o.k., but might as well do some preventative maintenance while I am in there. How about blowing out the airguide tubes? My left speedo is about 2mph slower than the right one. Could that be debris in the tube, or a leak? I read about blowing them out while winterizing, but I had already winterized and it was freezing when I read to do that.

Levin,
It's never a bad idea to clean up any connection no matter where it's located. The moist marine environment is never good on connections. I always recommend using dielectric grease when you put them back together. It really helps keeping down any corrosion. I've never blown out a pitot tube on any boat I've owned or winterized. But, I don't boat where the speedo systems tend to plug up. |

Thanks for the input, I'll be sure to use the di-electric grease on my connections. As far as the pitot tubes, are those easy to replace if I wanted to do that?

I've never blown out a pitot tube either. Or replaced one.
Your speedos can be adjusted on the dial faces. That's what the posts coming out of the face are for. If you have access to GPS that will show you speed you can calibrate them that way...make sure you're going straight when you set them. |
