For all you guys running classic or vintage vehicles, how do you value your cars or trucks true value for insurance purposes?
My insurance company is now asking for the true value of my '68 F250 to be able to provide full coverage insurance. If I don't give them this value, they will just value it as a '68 F250 in case of a claim, which I am sure in insurance actuary tables is probably worth $200. I think it may be worth a little more than that. Where do you go to get an appraisal? How much should one cost? |

Here in KY, they use a blue book value for taxes on older vehicles. My old Camaro costs me more in taxes than my 06 model truck does. You might try and find something like that as a starting point to agree on a value.
If you don't like that idea, I am sure their are forums just like this one for F-model trucks. Maybe someone on there could point you in the right direction. |

Ask your insurance agent what they want. What insurance company do you have? I have always argued over having to get so called "professional appraisals". Like anything, not all appraisers are versed in all areas, and thus can vary.
I have my "vintage tin" appraised by a body shop guy I know that does some restorations....He asks what you want on it, I tell him, he writes a letter....cost me a case of Bush... What do you think your 68 should be worth? |

Steve....Well, I have a very special relationship with my insurance agent. In fact, I am sleeping with her My wife works for her sisters Nationwide agency in Lake Zurich. So, I have to play nice.
I called Volo, and they want $150 for an appraisal. I would like to see if I could get it done for a little cheaper. I like the case of Busch price. I think my truck could easily go for $6500+ for the right buyer. Its pretty much all original and no rust (California truck). But, you never know, I could put it on ebay and have a couple of guys that just cannot live another day without a red/white '68 Camper Special like they had when they were younger. On the other hand, I may not be able to get $2K for that old gas hog. It would chap my arse if I wrecked it and the insurance company told me they would give me $350 because that is the Blue Book for a high mileage old Ford truck. I just want to get what its worth. I may just take it to Volo and spend the sheckels to get a accurate sense of what its worth. |

Dave,
Well if sleeping with the agent "dont get it done" you got problems! What your saying about values is exactly my point...depends on who/what/where, etc... What do you think the "professional appraiers" do? Chances are they dont know sh!tz about the value of your truck without looking it up. I have had my 72 Chevy 4x4 insured for $6500 "appraised" value since I restored it over 15 years ago. I actually talked to our agent about lowering the value a bit to save on my premium. After all, my truck has a lot of miles and wear & tear on her over those years. She suggested to just leave the value as is, since a very small portion of the insurance cost is in the actual collision portion of the premium. btw, my agent knows my appraiser and is fine with him doing it. What about going to Classic NADA ? It shows the low value of your truck over 9G's without the Camper Special option,etc.. With pics and this , would they accept the $6500? btw, just got my bill on the 72.. $128 til Nov 28th. Cant complain. . |

Steve....Great information! I just asked my agent about using this value. She said she would talk to an underwriter on Monday to see if this is acceptable to them. I sure hope it is, IF they don't jack up my premium. Hell, I can't afford the gas in the thing anymore. $63 to fill it up last week. Probably cost $73 this week.
Oh well, it doesn't get 8 miles per gallon, it gets 8 smiles per gallon |

This guy has got the ticket My GOOD BUDDY owns GREENS ROD SHOP AND RESTORATION in Callahan Florida. If anyone reads Street Scene Magazine there is a three page article on a 1969 camaro with a white vinyl top and a 600ci big block. Look though a Hemmings Book and also you may want to call Hagerty to see what they offer. Also if you have a specialty shop look at it thoroughly it should cost around $75.00 to $100.00 depending on the reputation of the shop. Post some pics and let me se this thing, I might be able to shoot you some solid info. One more thing if you have any receipts for what you have in the truck that will also help |

I didn't have a problem with Hagerty because I was never stupid enough to sign on with them after 3 of our chapter members had problems. I here other stories from other chapters as well. My boats are on my homeowners anyway.
Insurance is only good when there's a issue and they take care of you. The 3 people I got first hand info from all had problems. Hagerty did not come through with $$$ to cover proper repairs. The one classic worth mentioning, is a friend with a Century suffered underwater gear damage. So the adjuster could see the internal damage, he removed the gas tank. On some Century's, when you remove the tank, some of the rear deck supports come out with it. The adjuster shows up, get's inside the boat, then before anything could be said hops up on the aft deck to take pictures. The deck collapses breaking it apart at the hull sides and transom. The real kicker is this adjuster was wearing street shoes!!! What kind of insurance company sends a adjuster to look at wood boat without common knowledge that you do not walk around on a varnished deck with street shoes!! Now it gets real interesting - Hagerty covers some of the strut damage, considers the aft deck problem a separate claim but, with the small check to cover the strut, sends a notice of cancellation!!!!! I always get a kick out of their sales technique as well. They employ young female models to go to all the ACBS shows to walk around and pass out key floaty's to all the "dirty old men". |

I have my 31 Chevy and 73 Vette insured by Grundy Worldwide.
They asked me what coverage I wanted and then gave me a quote based on that. Worked for me. I tell them what it is worth to me and we work with that. |

......only bad thing is the city of Fontana Wisconsin SUCKS!!!!! Pam and I went to the ACBS show last Sept, early Sunday morning. We parked just north of the show, next to a city park. No parking meters, no yellow curb, etc. We had a parking ticket when we got back. They have a sign that face sideways, in the park , about 20 feet from the curb that tells you how to pay for parking (I thought it was a sign about the park hours)... there is some kind of a box at the OPPOSITE end of the block... AWAY from the direction of the lake. I wasnt too happy and called the police dept Monday morning, suggesting their signage could be a bit better. The "lady" answering the phone went from zero to B!TCH in about 10 seconds.. I told her I didnt have a problem paying to park.. I just need to KNOW! ......So they can take their little yuppie town and ...... |

My FIL is a classic car guru, and all of his iron is insured thru Grundy. Not sure if he has ever used them for a claim, but he said the rates are very reasonable. Mike |

Here's an FYI,I'm not sure if all insurance companies are the same in this. I didn't use the boat for a couple of years so I dropped the coverage, went to put it back on my homeowners and they would not do it,too old they say. Not sure if this is an Illinois thing or what. Then I found another place, Boats US, but because it was an inboard it need a marine survey. So I asked what was the difference between an inboard and an I/O ? They could not tell me,it just needed a survey. Thanks but no thanks. |

Gary, Not an IL thing...my boats are on our homeowners as well. The pontoon cost nothing(no full coverage) because its under 100hp and an outboard. The inboards are stated value and pretty reasonable. I think around $120 for the 64 valued at $5500. The only "problem" is no other drivers are insured, just Pam and I. . |
